Hi! The unit that I currently work has been having some issues staffing for the holidays.
How does your unit do it? How do you rotate? Do the rns work 8 or 12hours shifts?
I'm just looking for some insight.
TIA!!!

At my job if a holiday happens to fall on your regularly scheduled working day than you are working that holiday. Lucky for me my friend is Jewish and I work Jewish holidays for her and she works Christian holidays for me(I'm not Christian but my family is). I actually don't mind working some holidays..double time.

We work every other holiday, and it switches every other year. So for the winter holidays, one year we work Thanksgiving and New Year's; the following we work Christmas.
We're a combo of 8s and 12s.

8 hour shifts. 1.5x pay. Thanksgiving, Christmas new year considered the big ones. The hospital includes thanksgiving eve as a holiday. So there is 6 holidays. You sign up according to seniority. The only time it counts for us. 2 major and one minor. Minor is evenings of holiday.my kids are grown. I wanted thanksgiving day off. I'd sign up to work Christmas Eve days and Christmas Day evening. I'd work New Year's Eve if they needed help. It worked for us. Then young families could have Christmas Day off.

When I worked in the hospital, everyone was required to work 1 major and 1 minor summer and winter holiday. The summer holidays were Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day and winter Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's. Major holidays were the shifts that paid time and a half- the night before the holiday or the day of the holiday. Minor was the night of and day shifts on the day before Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. They put up a list in the backroom and everyone signed up for their 1-6 choices of holiday shifts. If you were put on your last choice, you usually got some kind of perk like being the 1st person called off if the unit was overstaffed. I never had a problem getting my #1 choices of Labor Day in the summer and Thanksgiving in the winter for major holidays.
The other random holidays like MLK Jr Day or President's Day were just regular days and there was never a shortage of people to sign up to get time and a half on a random Monday. I usually tried to work these days.
