Hi, I'm currently a sophomore in Stony Brook University majoring in Health Science.
I'm on this forum because I'm looking for some guidance in pursuing Nursing as a career but really confused on what to do. Not to mention I don't really have the best grades to apply to a nursing school..
I mean I guess I can pick my gpa up but I'm concerned that people my age or at my standing of college year (sophomores) are already applying to two year programs so they can be a nurse when they graduate as a senior.
I know that the prerequisite for most nursing schools are chemistry, maybe biology, anatomy & physiology, microbio but so far, I have a C in chem and B- in biology..
I'm taking anatomy &physiology and microbio this semester and am really determined to get an A but I'm wondering if I should just give up and try to pursue in something else because I'm afraid I can't really get into any schools with my grades right now.
My GPA is about 2.8 but my goal is to pick it up to 3.0 or above by next fall.
I was thinking about applying to the 2 year program at Stony Brook but I dont think I'll get in so I was even thinking about transferring out..
Is there anything I can do like perhaps graduate Stony with a Health Science degree and go for 1 year accelerated program?
If so, which schools have 1 year accelerated program in NYC? or in NY?
Or do you recommend that I transfer out to another school while I'm a sophomore and try it from there?
I really messed up but I just want to know, is there hope for me? Or should I just give up? :/
Any suggestions as well will be very helpful and appreciated. I dont really know much and just started my research so please help me out!
Thank you.

Never give up:) Check out the New York Programs board here on all nurses and look for schools that admit on criteria other than just gpa.
For instance in Washingon there are some schools that admit on GPA only, others that have a minimum gpa and a waitlist that accepts eveyone who applies, some schools are random lotteries, some schools award points for work experience and entrance exam tests.
Also retake basic chemistry and biology now! If you go into A&P and micro without a firm grasp on the building blocks of chem and bio you will have to work twice as hard to get good grades. Some schools even allow you to repeat courses once. So it better to take the extra time and repeat basic chem and biology then to get c's or b's in new courses.
Well.. I forgot to mention that those are my grades after retaking :/ I'll look into it and see if they'll let me repeat again but in Stony, the GPA gets averaged out and it also does not replace our old grade. If I were to apply to these schools, will they only see the grades I submit or my grades in general?
And thanks for your advice :)
No worries. The schools will see all of the grades as presented on your transcript. It would still be better to repeat again and get A's that average out to B's and then take Micro and A&P. Your grades in Micro and A&P will be better if you know chemistry and biology really well! As to how each school treats the repeated course it is different. Some only allow one repeat, others just look at your most recent grade.
To learn more about programs in your area you could go to your state board of nursing and check out each RN program listed and see if their admissions are base don criteria other than just gpa.

you'll never know until you try. so give it a shot. what have you got to lose? every school's requirements are different. some schools focus on grades others focus on grades as well as other things like an entrance essay, entrance exam, recommendations and references, an interview. when i applied to my nursing program, my nursing school looked at the whole package, not only on grades. yes, grades are important. you want to do the best you can in your classes. apply to as many schools as you need to and please don't be discouraged. just keep at it until you get in. its the only way.

Keep in mind that Stony Brook doesn't only look at your gpa, but they look at your overall application. The essay part of it is what sells you and it presents to the admissions committee who you are and why you want to go to SBU...not all incoming students have stellar gpas. If nursing is what you want to do, then go for it. We all have "bumps" in the road, but that shouldn't stop you from pursuing your dreams. Best of luck!
Thanks for all the encouragement! What are some core classes nursing schools look for? I know they def want to see gen chem, a&p, microbio but what else?
I know the criteria for admission has changed slightly. Take a look at the the website. I also highly encourage you to attend one of the info sessions. There you get a chance to ask any question and get an answer.
I'm not sure if you guys will receive this comment because it has been a really long time since my post but I'm really glad to let you guys know that I have landed an interview for Stony Brook's 2 year basic baccalaureate program!
I just want to really thank you guys for the encouragement that ultimately got me to where I am today. I know it was just merely a post but still, I didn't give up and here I am.
Thank you!!!
