HELP!

I'm a new grad currently orienting on a telemetry floor. But after my orientation I'm going to a general med-surg unit. Weird, I know. But there's already a lot of orientees on the floor I got hired for so they had me orient on a different unit.

My problem right now is that the manager on the telemetry floor is offering me a full time 7p-7a position. It's a little tempting because I really want telemetry experience. The nurses on the floor including my preceptor are encouraging me to get telemetry experience because they say if you can make it in telemetry, you can make it anywhere. I am just hesitant because after 1 week of orienting on the telemetry floor, it's been crazy hectic! The turn over rate is ridiculous. I'm so overwhelmed, but I am learning sooooo much! I see the nurses stressing and it scares me! I don't know whether I should take the telemetry position or go to the med-surg floor.

Does anyone here work in a telemetry unit 7p-7a? How is it? Is it still busy? How is the turn over rate during the night shift?

    Go with your gut. I work nights in a telemetry unit. It's busy and stressful and the turnover is high, but it's great experience! If it's where you think you want to be, you'll be happier making the change.

You do know that they are trying to get you to stay because they are in the process of losing more people... as long as you go in knowing this and really understand that it might be really hard to stay there (maybe management sucks, etc.) I'd look around quick and find out how many are left who have more than 2 years experience on them. Will you be working with essentially all

    Yes I do know they are losing 2 night nurses. And the floor is going through some major changes that the nurses do not like, which is why some are transferring to other units. There are still some good nurses on nights that I know of that have more than 2 years experience. I want the telemetry experience, I get along with everyone on the floor, but I'm just afraid that I might regret it later. I might get so stressed out and wish I went to med-surg.

    It is true. If you can make it on a telemetry floor you can make it anywhere. The turn over on nights is probably slightly less but when ever there are monitors there will be transfering in and out of the unit and to and from cath lab. But, the monitoring experience will open many doors for you like the OR, ICU, Cath lab or ED Med-surg in just as busy but I feel have many more "heavy" patients and total cares. It's just as busy but in a different way.

    Follow you heart, get a year there then you can go anywhere. Let them train you, you'll be busy....but I think you'll appreciate it in the long run.

    Go for it! If you feel it, do it. 7a-7p shifts are so great and it sounds like you already have proven yourself on the floor. Med surge isn't any easier and it sounds like you found a little niche. Go for it!
