Help Applying to NY

Hi everyone!

I'm in the position now to retake my NCLEX-RN exam. Although this will be my 5th time taking it i know in myself that i will surely pass.

Right now i have also applied for the NCLEX-LPN exam. Both will be in the New York State. I am now eligible to take both all i need is to pay the fee and I'm good to go.

My question is what is now a good refresher course or NCLEX review courses that you will recommend?

  • First of all I did not graduate here in the USA i graduated from the Philippines.
  • Next I have taken the Kaplan Review Course Last year and half.
  • I have tried doing self review and the questionnaires from different sources.

Hopefully people will still provide useful information in this topic like they did before. I love this site because they make you feel as if you will be able to pass your exam because they are very helpful and very encouraging people in this site.

I'm from NY too and graduated in the Philippines last year. Took my first NClex last Monday and failed. Now I'm back to studying :(

Hi kababayans!

Im in the same situation as you guys, i graduated 3 yrs ago though, and I'm about to take it this coming september. Are you both residing in new york?

Don't give up! i took my first attempt last May 2011 but didn't pass all because i didn't review and that was mainly my fault. It was my mistake that i did not reapply immediately and i got stuck with the concurrency drama. Finally, after figuring out what to do with my life, i decided to once again want to give Nclex-Rn another shot, im having a hard time memorizing the content as ive been out of school for 3 yrs now. They said not to memorize but i dont know the content anymore and i dont know what to do and how to review. But anyway, if you guys want to review together let me know :)

Oh ok! I thought its already here in NY the concurrency issue, I hope we will All Pass before that news you heard is approved coz its so very hard to start all over again and it's to complicated...!!! Sure I am happy to share how I prepare for my exams, I graduated long time a go it's like 16 years so I completely forgot the Content and whole nursing stuff, I now using Mary Hogan RN for Content, Both Practice and Questions and for my Pharmacology, I have Pharm Flash , Flash Cards, I have PDA, Just finish LIve class from Hurst, definetely I will purchase the video from Hurst to brush up again for my Content, the last thing I will be reviewing was the Kaplan Q trainers...Right now I am in my practice questions of health promotion and maintainance and just finish all topics areas! I have Saunders 5th Ed.. But I choose the Hogan BOOk! So I hope I'll share it to you and explained it well!!

hello kabayans, just like you, i failed on my first try. and i will be taking it 60 days after. you are not alone. i passed the PNLE last 2010 with 83%. all i can say is that :

1.) i underestimated the NCLEX thinking that it is the same as the PNLE.

2.) i have 2 jobs (9am-9pm) with no days off. so i only studied 1-2 hours/day

3.) i CRAM and read 1 week before the exam, i even read the night before the exam.

4.) ANXIETY KILLED ME

besides, Philippine nursing curriculum is way different than the US standards. so it's gonna be hard for the international nurses to adjust with the US setting (it is ALL ideal). so right now, what i'm going to do is to DOUBLE my effort to study and i will put into my heart and mind that "I AM A NURSE, I CAN TAKE CARE OF MY PATIENTS".

we can do this kabayans!!!

i am planning to purchase the HURST review. is it very good in content? coz i already have the kaplan, i badly need some refresher coz i've been out of school for 3 years now, kaplan is good in strategies though..

Saunders is very good fOr content and Kaplan for questionares. I didn't study too I wanted to see first how it was like really taking the nclex exam. Someone told me here in forum that I'm ridiculous for wasting money. I ddnt reply to him/her yet. I want to tell her/him that some people have different way of passing the nclex and I'm one of the person who wants to experience it first then know my weaknesses. Which I found out I have a really bad test anxiety :(

let us learn from this experience, trust your instincts. if you think you are good without any online review, go for it, but if you are having a hard time studying on your own. review centers are there to help and guide you. i am sure we can do this.

Were really on the same boat im about 3 years out as well. And like you i did not quite give all my effort on my first exam. I took it in the Philippines but it took me 9 months to do so because my ATT came after 9 months. And while waiting i got a job at a call center and thats were all my time and energy went. But up until now i have not given up hope because im still looking for a brighter future for me and my fiancee. Hopefully we will all pass here and live beter lives. If there will be a review session with the people on the same boat as us im willing to go, i just have a job right now as a caregiver and dont have much time off but i am really ready and willing to finish this exam once and for all.

same boat

Dont lose hope we will pass no matter what!

This is the first time i've heard of this "Concurrency Issue" could you shed some light on this for me or those who have not yet heard of this? Sounds like its a bad thing for us. And thank you for sharing your review and materials. Hopefully we will also be albe to use those and pass.

Hi, its alright failing your exam. I called the NY board of education and i told them that i did not pass before and the guy i talked to also said its quite alright because its not a 100%. He was very comforting about this issue. Congrats on passing your PNLE with high marks. I did not get a chance to take that because i am a US resident and they sent me off here in NY after i finishe school because i did not need it. And yes i totaly agree that our curriculum is tottaly different sometimes me and my cousin who finished her nursing school here in the US have short study sessions and it seems how they taught her was different from ours. BUt that doesnt mean that we will not pass. Its just a matter of how hard we try and how bad we want to be NURSES! Lets all pass together!

i am planning to purchase the HURST review. is it very good in content? coz i already have the kaplan, i badly need some refresher coz i've been out of school for 3 years now, kaplan is good in strategies though..

I've heard that HURST has very good content from the people in this forums. I also had Kaplan and so did my cousin who graduated here in the US,

Thats true, i know in myself that im a "Trial and Error" type of guy who learns through experience. And i know failing multiple times makes me feel that im getting the hang of the exam. All i need is to make a harder effort in passing and i know ill be good to go and so we all will.
