Hello everyone

Published

i am new here. i have a bs degree in human services and work at a community hospital as the guest services coordinator for over a year . the nursing supervisor suggested maybe i should consider nursing because of my compassion towards our patients at the hospital. he told me he would hire me as an na to aquire some experience on the med. surg. wing, which would also help pay for part of my tuition, while attending the program. i have decided to do so. this up coming semester i will be in pre-nursing starting with a & p.

i am 48 years old and scared as well as excited. i know this will be the challenge of a lifetime.

i was fortunate to stumble on this site while looking at different sites for anatomy...etc.

any advice is most welcome! i have always been an excellent student but this is different in that i have not had an extensive background in the sciences.

thanks, sharon.

hi i am 46 years old and started prerequisites a little over a year ago.

i also didn't have extensive science background. english is also my second language but i was an english major and wanted to get into teaching prior to switching to nursing. take it slow in the beginning, just take a&p since it is a very demanding class. i studied my butt of for a&p 1, made an a but it took almost all of my free time to get there. i will take a&p2 this fall. gpa is everything so try to make a's in all of your pre-nursing science classes.

you can do it! good luck and welcome to this site.

Just wanted to say welcome to the boards and good luck! If this is what you want, then you'll do great!

Hi Sharon,

I am also starting pre-nursing this fall. I have a BA in journalism, but I want to do something more rewarding, something where I can touch lives daily. So that's how I came to the decision to go to nursing school. Both of my sisters are nurses, and they love their jobs, get paid well and have a secure career.

Anyway, I am also excited but scared. I also do not have an extensive science background. As a journalism major in the past, my classes were English-focused, not as much science and math. However, I think my math and English classes are going to transfer, getting me out of re-taking at least 12 credits! :)

Anyway, congratulations on starting nursing school. It also must be encouraging to you that someone suggested that you should be a nurse because of your compassion ... that is a great compliment! :)

Best wishes! You'll do great!

hi, sharon!

here are some anatomy links for you to check out and bookmark. they may come in handy for you study of a&p.

https://allnurses.com/forums/f198/useful-sites-pre-nursing-nursing-students-76828.html

http://mywebpages.comcast.net/wnor/terminologyanatplanes.htm - here is a site the shows and tells you the anatomical planes of the body, defines terms of relation or position, defines terms of movement, and has a listing of frequently used medical terms in anatomy with their definitions. a reference you might want to print out for your anatomy notebooks. it also has pretty extensive lists of quiz questions with answers for practicing.

http://www.msjensen.gen.umn.edu/webanatomy/ - these are links into fun interactive anatomy quizzes designed for freshman anatomy and physiology students presented by the university of minnesota. they are organized by body system and subjects. you can take the quizzes as a single player on your own, against a timed clock, or on line against other students (still under construction). at the left side are links into a group of matching questions and lots of diagrams of anatomical structures to labeling organized by body system.

http://www.rad.washington.edu/atlas2/ - nicely presented drawings of the muscles of the upper and lower extremities. select a muscle to view a beautiful drawing of it's location, and a listing of it's origin, insertion, action, innervation and arterial supply.

http://users.rcn.com/jkimball.ma.ultranet/biologypages/ - this is a very simple review of biology subjects covered in a basic college biology class from the online site of the biology textbook maintained and written by john w. kimball, a former harvard professor.

don't forget to also check this other student forum for information and any questions you might have:

Welcome to Allnurses. Nice to meet you! Good luck to you. You're definately right about one thing: this will be the challenge of a lifetime.

Thanks! I appeciate the links....have several bookmarked already. Yes, it will be a challenge but I like that. I have always held the belief, if it is too easy it is not worth as much as things that provoke us to think. I am happy to have found this website! Any feedback is most welcome.

Well, I love people...one reason I went into the Human Services field. I do realize compassion is not going to earn me my nursing degree...hard work is and I pity my dear husband the next few years...but he is supportive and a wonderful man!

Nursing school is indeed a "family" endeavor. How lucky to have a supportive spouse.
