Hello Australian Nurses!!

Hello,

I am an American, and I am looking to possibly work in Australia. I have been a nurse for 10 years, with experience in ICU, med/surg, Emergency, telemetry. I have been to Australia several times, and have fallen in love with it. I am looking to get information on "what it's like to be a nurse in Australia?" I am looking for information on patient to nurse ratios, taxes, salaries, and the different fields to get into. I would truly appreciate any information you might send my way.

Regards....

i am joining Master in nursing from march 2009. I have completed a bachelours degree in pharmacy but due to inadequate finances for masters in pharmacy i have decided to switch on to MN. I wanted to know how is it like working as a Registered Nurse in Australia? Do Registered nurses have to clean, bathe male patients ( sorry to be mean :p do they have to the crappy stuff aswell?). I respect the job very much and would like to work for the needy but i also I want to consider all aspects of the job. Please reply tell mw how are the working conditions for registered nurses in australia?

I think you will find nurses generally work the same regardless on country and if a patient requires cleaning and the nurse is available then they should do it as well as any other 'crappy' stuff that comes up.

Thankyou so much for your reply..few people told me its the nursing assistants who do the crappy job? pls clarify if its true? Thanks once again

I havent worked in australia, that's why I'm on this post. I'm trying to find out the same. What country are you from?

I have worked in Australia and I can tell you right now, you will be cleaning up after incontinent patients, vomitus, colostomy bags that go 'pop' and a myriad of other 'crappy' things. Most hospitals don't have nursing assistants, they have RNs and ENs. If you work on the floor it doesn't matter whether you have a PhD or a Diploma, you will still do dirty work.

Can you pls tell me how often will i have to do this in a period of 8 months of clinical placement? lol..i know its a very stupid question..but still pls answer me if you can..i more interested for midwifery and pediatric care..may be i will look for another degree in it in future..Thankyou for replying me :)

Hi barkles I am from India and i am joining MN COURSE from march 2009...My friends told me its a very respectable job over there at oz...but im still aprehensive if i have to do crappy stuff lol...:p

Doesn't matter what sort of job you do in nursing there will be elements of cleaning or other sorts of jobs. If this is something you are worried about then maybe nursing isn't what you should be looking at

Thankyou so much for your reply Ma'am.

That was awesome! Great description....I think that "future student," may change her mind when she reads this letter....

Sorry prospectivestu, but what on earth do you think nurses do? When we had enough of coffee and sudoku we might, eventually, check the pulse if we can be bothered, or see if they breathe?

Got news for you, even children and pregnant women have bowel movement, vomit etc. And you get to clean it.
