Getting ready for nursing school

Published

Hi everyone,

I am starting the nursing program on January. Right now I'm taking stat, algebra, comp2, and speech. Since none of my classes are demanding I have some time to go over Anatomy again and refresh my knowledge . Would going over anatomy be helpful in nursing school?

Any other suggestions do you have for me?

Simple question with a simple answer -- Yes it's helpful :)

Best of luck on your journey.

start working as a PCT or nurse extern or something along those lines.

honestly you probably won't even use anatomy much your first semester and you will probably forget it by the time medsurge classes come around. Most anatomy is basic stuff, nothing too detailed or cellular.

have fun and enjoy your time.

You're going to use your A&P knowledge more than that. The more in-depth stuff, like what the hormones do, how your body balances electrolytes and what effects they have, yeah, you're not going to use for while, and even then, it's going to be a lot of just understanding normal ranges in lab values and what they mean... But knowing the names of the parts of your body, and identifying how the parts of your body commonly react to different things, like the basics of inflammatory response, you're going to be using that from day 1. While you're going to be learning basic things during your first semester, like taking vital signs, you know from A&P that if the patient has a fever, that there's a significance to that, and there's common reasons for that fever, like an infection.

Review the bones and muscles, and just go over the different body systems, and make sure you have a general understanding of what you learned.

Cardiovascular system

Endocrine System

Digestive System

Muscuskeletal System (organism level, organ level, and molecullar and cellular levels).

Electrolytes

Urinary system

And all the human body system. Don't need to know everything but it would be ideal to do so. It makes life easier.

Learn to reward yourself, prevention or decrease burnout.

Those data sound a lot but take it easy. I forgot many of those when I started the program; however, almost everything came back when they are used a lot in the nursing courses. The review is much more painless while in the program. The grading system has been very tough.

In short, yes, review at your own pace and don't stress out. We had a few people got kicked out from the program already-- they underestimated the program. It did start slow then suddenly us students were juggling to catch all the data given to us. Don't procrastinate! Study and review unless you know nursing skills already.
