didn't get accepted!

I am devastated! I have been attending the Univ. of Akron parttime for about 2 years now. I wanted to become an RN sooner than 4 years, so I decided to apply to Aultman School of Nursing and Stark State College in Canton. I thought I would get a 2 year degree RN then go back to the Univ. of Akron and go through the excellarated program "RN to BSN" which would only take 1 year to complete.

I got accepted into Stark State---for the class of 2007!!! I can't wait that long! So I applied to Aultman School of Nursing. I took their entrance test. They called me back and told me that I scored very high on their nursing entrance exam and that they wanted to interview me for the upcoming Nursing program that begins in January. I was so excited! The interview went well--atleast that's what I thought. They even sent me a letter to take their 4 hour CPR class--so I completed that. I just received a letter from Aultman stating that I WAS NOT ACCEPTED in the program. I was absolutely devastated! I cried like a baby for 2 hours! I have a gradepoint average of 3.8; I have all of my prerequisites AND corequisites completed; I work at Akron General. I am a very compassionate person who so much wants to be a nurse!!! I have been working so for this! I just can't understand why I did not get accepted! I even called Aultman and asked what I did wrong. She said the "panel" has to look at each candidate very closely to decide who gets accepted.

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT KIND OF CANDIDATES THEY LOOK FOR? MY CREDENTIALS WERE SO GOOD AND MY ACADEMIC BACKGROUND WAS AWESOME! I JUST WANT TO KNOW WHY I DID NOT GET ACCEPTED. I am feeling so disappointed right now.

Class of 2005 at our cc.... 347 applicants for 42 slots. We have objective criteria for admission, but is absolutely hearbreaking to see so many people turned down. This is due to the critical lack of nursing faculty (we're "graying out") and low salaries (the average ADN staff nurse we graduate often makes more $$$ than we do).

It has gotten so difficult to get into nursing school. In Dallas, the January ADN program only accepted people with a 3.77 GPA who had completed all the pre-req's and co-req's. A year ago, you could get in with a 3.4.

Students who weren't accepted were told to retake classes to bring up their GPA and complete all pre-req's and co-req's before reapplying.

I just wanted you to know that it isn't you personally. So many extremely qualified people aren't getting in. There are simply too many applicants and not enough spaces. It is a shame that nursing professors are paid so little that it is almost impossible to find anyone willing to leave the hospital to teach.

These posts (the entire thread actually) has made me realize that I cannot afford to try and just whiz by on classes that I may not care for or that perhaps I'm really good at and don't think I need "every single thing" on. I'm going to make sure I'm focused, I'm alert and I'm giving all attention to what's going on in classes and clinicals.

I am sorry for your unfortunate news, marelle. :o I know the kind people here from these forums have given you undoubtly wonderful advice though. Keep your head and chin up high. Everything, everything happens for a reason. :) All and anything that happens in your life either breaks you or makes you, builds you or binds you. This just means that there's something better out there for you or there's a tad bit more you might wanna look into doing. :) Good luck, friend!

I am so sorry to hear your bad news. You sound like you'll be a real asset to the profession. I know you'll find a way to get into a program because you are so determined and an excellent student. All of the best to you! Try the BSN program. it's certainly worth a shot.
