Geodon?

I have given geodon for migrains and to knock out a confussed combative patient but not for depression.

My guess is that with all those medications, the MD is treating symptoms that your family member is reporting to her/him, but perhaps not to you and there is more to the story.

Perhaps it's a bit more severe than just "depression", but depression with some other symptoms, such as bipolar, aggitation or a touch of pyschotic symptoms.

I'm no expert by any means, but if it were a "normal" case of just depression they wouldn't be on all those meds.

Perhaps too it's just a temporary thing.

Some antipsych. drugs do help with depression, which is why Geodon is being perscribed.

Many atypical drugs used for bipolar disorder can be used for depression as well -we dont quite understand how it works for depression, but they do.

Sounds like maybe your family member has a more severe case of Depression maybe?

Severe depression can lead to psychotic images or maybe they have a psychotic element that is sepereate from the depression.

I was just curious if anyone has ever seen Geodon used to treat depression. A member of my family is taking this along with Celexa, Trazadone and Xanax (All prescribed by the same MD) This seems a little off to me. Would appreciate any input you have to offer.

It looks like your loved one is suffering.Be as supportive as you can be.Several members of my family have suffered with drug resistant depression and sadly other members of the family say things like " Oh-it's all in her head" or "She just needs to -fill in the blank -" Severe depression can encompass many symptoms and it looks like your loved one is being treated aggressively.I hope it works out...

I have seen this type combination of meds before in psych.

Sometimes the atypicals can be used for off book reasons, not always psychosis. The medication can sometimes make the SSRI act quicker or agitation or as a prophalatic for psychosis. She should ask the pdoc for the rationale.

It is the Xanax that I would be concerned with. I hate that drug. It has such a short half life that alot of people develop a dependence on it. The longer acting benzos are less addictive. I guess it is good for short term anxiety. Trazadone is a good sleeper and may help their depression a little.
