Foreign Student Nurse on OPT

Published

Hi guys,

I am foreign student studying in Nursing Program in US school. I am graduating anytime soon and planning on trasnfering to 4 year college. I have a choice of 50 states with hundreds of schools each. Can you please help me narrow down my list to states which are more likely to hire foreign nurse on OPT status. I do understand the whole matter with retrogression. I just want to know the states which are more likely to hire me at least for a year now. I am very grateful for your answers.

p.s How realistic for me to stay in NY?

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

With retrogression I think it is getting even harder now to find employers willing to offer jobs. I think it will be a case of you making lots of phone calls to hospitals to find out.

Specializes in Nephro, ICU, LTC and counting.

I think she will be able to find a job for the period her OPT is valid, after that it is very likely that she will also be on the same waiting boat as thousands of other foreign nurses.

I think NY itself has a lot of nursing opportunities. Other places like California, Texas, Florida, and Arizona also have plenty of nursing job. I think OPT will allow you to work for one year. After that you probably have to convince your employer to file for your green card petition. Don't know how long it will take to get the work permit after your OPT expires. All the best, and hope things work ok for you.

That maybe the case but recently we have had a few students posting that they are struggling to find employers whilst on OPT which is why I made my comment that they will have to do a lot of contacting

That was what has been happening in the past, but with no end in sight now for the retrogression, many facilities are now unwilling to even hire with the OPT and put in the training time with them when there is no guarantee by any means that they will be able to work after completing the OPT.

With the shear number of I-485 petitions that were submitted this past summer, we are expecting it to be several years before they open that u[p again.

Things are quite different now than they were even a year ago, and we expect it get even worse due to the number of applicants for visas. Definitely not get easier.

So what do you suggest i do since i am graduating in May. Should i apply with hospitals that can petition and then hope they will open the Visas? What is the chance of getting the visas when they open them? do you know any hospitals that can sponser if i have an opt?

For the green card, we call it petitioning. There are no visas available now and we do not expect any for quite some time. At the end of the one year, you are going to have to return to full-time status as a student to be able to remain in the US when that is done or you will have to leave.

We are seeing a significant decrease in the number of hospitals that are even hiring or willing to hire with the OPT as they know that the nurse is not going to be able to continue with them when their EAD expires.

We do not expect things to open for at least several years for the AOS processing and that is what you would be going thru.
