Depends entirely on your managers. Flexible shifts have pluses and minuses for admisntration and staff, it really depends on if your manager is willing to try different things. Do you want it? Or is management pushig it on you?

We do this. It helps to cover more areas of need. As of this point it is a win/win.
Every once in awhile we hear rumors of how it will be stopped. But the need for it is too great to change.

I work some 3-7pm shifts and coordinate with another nurse who wants to work 7-3 sometimes. We make our schedule together so there are no holes in the schedule.
My unit is an all 12hr unit.
If you can find another nurse, especially a per diem with a flexible schedule to coordinate with, most managers will work with you.

I have known nurses who worked 2 8 hour shifts and 2 12 hours shifts a week for a total of 40 hours.

I agree with others, depends on your managers. Most places I have worked (acute care hospital settings) want nurse's doing 12's exclusively. However if you are in the nursing home environment, or even some hospitals, the nurses are still doing either 8's or a mixture. I love my 12's!!

I once worked 2 - 12's and an 8 - and frequently added another 8 or 12. The hospital paid full benefits if you worked 32 hours/week, so that worked well for me. And my contract called for everything over 32 to be overtime FOR ME. Some of the 3-12 nurses had a contract that paid overtime for anything over 36, others were 40! Depended on who was your manager, and how desperate the hospital was when they hired you.

My first nursing job was 2 8's and 2 12's. Right now I work 2 12's, and my unit is a mix of those who work only 12's, those who work only 8's, those who work both, and those who work PRN. So it's definitely possible. It just depends where you are working if the manager will allow/disallow it.

It really depends on your facility. At my place the standard is 8s, but if I wanted to work 12s I could. I don't right now, but I could :)
