I always convert this way.

mcg to mg

mcg / 1000 = mg

mg to mcg

mg x 1000 = mcg

mg to gm

mg / 1000 = gm

gm to mg

gm x 1000 = mg

Greetings fellow nurses in any field, I am trying to figure out drug conversions and need a site I can go to for reference..
Examples: convert 127 mcg = mg
65 mg - mcg
.238 mg = ? mcg
14 mg =?gm
670mcg=?mg
400mg=?gm
7mg tablet=?mg/0.5 tablet
48mg/tab-12/mg tab
What is the correct way to convert these from one to the other please...andmake it wasy!!
As well I need to know the answer to this...and how to get the answer as well
Question:
Calculate the number of tablets or capsules administered for each dose over a 24 hour period
a/calcium carbonate 600 mg.p.o. t.i.d. The medication is available in 300 mg tablets.
b) Prednisone 40 mg po. u.i.d The medication is available in 5 mg tablets
Calculate the amount of liquid administered for each dose and for the 24 hour period
a) Docusate sodium syrup 200 mg.p.o. u.i.d. The medication is available in 4mg per mL
b) Gravol liquid 75 mg,p.o. q4h p.r.n. Gravol liquid is available in 15 mg per 5 mL

127 mcg = .127 mg

The way I do these calculations is if its asking u to go from small unit to big unit (mcg to mg) I divide and when going form big unit to small unit I multiply- So If u know that 1 milligram(mg) = 1000 micrograms(mcg) you divide 127/1000= .127

A) Calcium Carbonate 600mg p.o t.i.d. med available only in 300 mg tablets so we have a problem here! Here's the formula Ordered over on hand (600 is ordered, 300 is what u have on hand). Ordered X Quantity = 600 X 1 =2

On hand 300

therefore you have to give the patient 2 tablets each 300 mg to make 1 dose!

Gravol liquid 75 mg /p.o /q 4 h /p.r.n available 15 mg per 5 ml

Here's that formuala again!

Ordered X quantity = 75 X 5 so 75/15= 5

On hand 15 then 5 X 5= 25( your answer)

So give 25 ml Gravol p.o/ q 4 h/ p.r.n

- they have formulas for these calculations

From my manual:

mcg = microgram

mg = milligram

g = gram

1000 mcg = 1 mg

1000 mg = 1 g

eg) 1000 mcg = 1 mg

and 800 mcg = 0.8 mg (I've moved the decimal point in 800 3 spaces to the left)

and so 750 mcg = count the 3 spaces to the left = 0.75 mg

eg. if you have 1 mg = 1000 mcg

and if you have 2 mg = 2000 mcg (1000 x 2 = 2000)

and if you have 37 mg = (multiply 1000 x 37 = 37 000) 37 000 mcg

For dosages:

Desired dose x vehicle (drug form) = amount to administer

dose on hand

Eg. Order is Benadryl 75 mg. The drug label reads Benadryl 0.025 g. How many tablets are needed?

answer is calculated:

desired dose x vehicle = x (amount to administer)

dose on hand

75 mg x 1 tablet = x

0.025 g

desired dose and dose on hand have to be in the same unit of measure

therefore 0.025 g = 25 mg (count three decimal points to the right of 0.025)

75 mg x 1 tab = x

25 mg

3 x 1 tab =x

3 tabs = x (amount to administer)

I always remember:

what you want

what youve got = number of tablets you use.

As far as converting mg--> mcg and back its basic maths- mcg is 1/1000th of mg. Just move the decimal point
