I've been an LPN since 2008. I'm currently working PRN for a health screening company. We do health screenings at companies for their employees (height, weight, BP checks, cholesterol screening, etc.) I'm doing this until I can get out of floor nursing. I'm taking online classes to become a medical coder (want a desk job).
I was recently assigned to do two flu clinics with them this month. The first one I will be working with two other LPNs. The second one I was chosen to be the "team leader nurse" of the clinic, and two other nurses are supposed to be there as well. Even though I've worked in other clinic settings and given injections, I haven't given the flu vaccine since nursing school! Also being in charge of the second clinic I'm assigned makes me nervous! lol
Any tips for running the flu clinic? Anyone ever have a pt. have an adverse reaction?! I had a guy pass out on me once after an injection when I worked for a private doctor. We had to call an ambulance & everything (turns out he fainted easy with needles & he was fine). So ever since, working alone or being a nurse in charge makes me a little nervous!
Been there,done that, ASN, RN

Flu clinics are actually fun! Review the injection technique on You Tube , if necessary..... it's just an IM in the deltoid.
As team leader, you would assign roles to the other nurses. In my case... I did the paperwork,
the other nurses did the injections.
Never saw a reaction, but I made sure I knew where the nearest landline was to call 911 and if there was any resuscitation equipment on site.
OK Thanks, that puts my mind at ease a bit! :) I actually liked giving the flu shot in nursing school, just don't like managing others!

On the side Im also working as an independent contractor doing flu shot & biometric screenings here in North California. Its the easiest job ever. Read the facts about the vaccine, as people will ask you questions
* can they get it if they are little bit sick
* can they still have it if they are pregnant
*if they are on atb/steroids
Be prepared & be confident!:) goodluck
Cheers ??

I work on the side for a company that does biometric screenings, flu vax, etc. Dont worry, like the other poster said, take a quick look at how and where to give the vaccine, and you will do great!
It's really an easy job-great way to earn some extra money! Good luck!
OK Thanks everyone! :) I have started reviewing flu stuff some on my company's website & online...

The biggest problems I ever had with flu clinics was being overwhelmed at times, you just have to be firm with your crowd control, and working with a nurse who gave several shots that she figured were "empty" because she wasn't paying attention to what she was doing. We were allowed to prefill syringes from a multi-dose vial and have them set up and ready. Of course you can't be doing that if you aren't going to keep track of which you have actually filled and what they are. I found out that she was in left field after she had administered my pneumonia vaccine. Boy was I incensed. I went to my doctor who said I should get revaccinated. When I inquired about a refund with the company providing the clinics, they refused to give a refund or to revaccinate me at no cost. I should have sued them.
