Finding my fnp preceptor

Good afternoon

I'm starting the FNP program this coming Monday. I'm a little nervous about finding a nurse practitioner preceptor, even though my practicum starts in the summer 2019. I know I have plenty of time, but I heard it is a struggle. Does anyone know or would like to precept me for the summer 2019 for the health assessment course? I'm located in Riverview, FL thank you so much

Moved to Student NP forum, hope you are able to find a preceptor! :)

Hello! I am also looking for my preceptors. I was able to locate my first one by asking a doctor I work with who has an internal med practice. I would suggest using your network first. I have other connections, but all out of state. I plan to go around with cookies and a folder of my resume and business cards. Act professional and I am sure you will find someone :)

Great ideas. will do.

thank you and best of luck for you :)

My advise start now! use all your connections even your primary care doctor. Many sites are booked way in advance.

Good Luck!

Wow. Thank you for letting me know.

I have already contacted my PCP and I have high hopes.

I like the idea of cookies. I am struggling to find a preceptor in my area. I live in NC and the major universities have already booked most of the nurse practitioners around here. I am a student at Walden.

You could also try attending local NP meetings and network network network! Let EVERYBODY know you're in NP school and if they know ANYONE who may be interested in precepting. You could also try Public Health depts, family planning clinics, FQHCs, Indian Health Services, etc. These types of clinics are more likely to take students because they aren't as productivity based as other clinic types. Many clinics don't allow students even though the providers there would like to precept because having a student slows down productivity.

Just an update, cookies worked perfectly. I only physically went to two offices (both I had wanted to precept at) and BOTH places said they would precept me and appreciated how forward and professional I was about it. Good luck guys!

  • @my2butterflies What part of NC are you in? and @kelbeljo what did you say when you went to the offices? I have considered this but am unsure of what exactly to say. Any tips on how to handle this part will be greatly appreciated

I am in the same nerve wracking situation. I begin my program on Monday and hope to start working part-time next month. Once I get settled into both, I am going to network hard. I live in northern VA and I have heard horror stories of people driving hours from their homes for clinicals. I am getting myself ready mentally to do what needs to be done. Good luck to all!

Hi, how has been your experince, i know this is a old post?

Hello simplyyysid,

My university provides a database of past preceptors, so I sent emails to about 15 of them for my first clinical rotation in the summer of 2020. One preceptor reached out to me, but the NP did not meet the requirements.

Also, I signed up for a preceptor pass on "ENP Network". Within a week, I heard from 2 potential preceptors and I am in the process with one of them now. The NP is about 45 minutes to 1.5 hours away from me, depending on traffic. That is fine with me. I am just glad I was lucky enough to find one.

Now that I have my first preceptorship locked in, I have to start searching for two preceptors for my fall 2020 clinical rotations. I hope I am fortunate enough to find them within the next few months.

Good luck to you!
