Can anyone please tell me if you need a certain amount of money to take with you to the US when you relocate...I dont neccesarily mean to live on, I mean is it expected that you have to have a certain amount by law in order to gain entry???
Also do you have to pay off your outstanding debts, for eg, credit cards etc prior to leaving or can you continue to pay them via bank credits, transfers etc....many thanks

You do not need any amount of money to locate to the US but having some to start with would be expected, because you will probably need to put some money down as down payments.
No you do not need to pay any outstanding debts just transfer money back to the UK. Best not to ignore any UK debt thinking they can't get you in the US. It is getting to be a small world and they can find you
Thanks for your reply Anna, I really appreciate this. Are you also in the process of relocating?
yep, with one thing and another been at this process nearly 4 years now stuck in retrogression

4 Years! Have just got I140 approval in Feb myself, but now stuck in retrogression, not sure how much longer it will be to actually getting a visa but am already getting fed up of waiting. Is anybody else out there thinking of giving up?? Its ridiculous there are no visas for nurses who want to work in the US.
If you was approved in Feb I am surprised you did not get through before retrogression affected us all
Oh, well, I saw that you have had I140 approved for some time and still waiting, I thought retrogression happened in Oct? Presuming we are all in a queue thought that you would get your visa before me. I filed in July last year. Could it be months still before we are able to move?, don't know, its all very difficult esp as have a teenager in middle of GCSE's.
I initially was approved in 2005 then employer backed out and I had to find another then got caught up when immigration changed which centre did what visas. Then in Jan 06 hubby changed his mind as he was fed up will all the delays seeing as we started this process in 2004 and then in August changed his mind again to which we got approval in 11 days. Retrogression happened in Oct but if you had approval in Feb I would have expected you to have completed DS230 by now unless you mean this feb (2007) It will still be several months before you move if you have only just received approval but your employer/lawyer should still be able to complete everything up to packet 3 (DS230) and then it is a case of just waiting for visas to be sorted
Oh yes, I meant Feb 2007! I know how your husband feels believe me, I change my mind about it all several times a day!
From what I can gather it took 4 months for Congress to pass the 90,000 visas last time, that was from intro of Bill to its passing and visas available, but as yet no Bill has been introduced into Congress, apart from the CIR for complete exemption which could take a year at least.

Most people who I have talked to about this say that although there's no legal requirement you should have some money to fall back on because it may take a couple of months before you get your first pay packet - you'll be waiting for your SSN# etc.
Also do make sure you read the primer at the top on obtaining a credit history in the USA & don't forget to get an American Express Card here in the UK. They will transfer you a decent credit limit to a US card so at least you'll have something!
I'm sooooo p***** off about retrogression & different people say different things about how long it's going to be. Hammond Law & Shusterman are fairly up-beat about possible movements in the summer whereas others on here think it's going to be ages & ages!!
All we can do is hope, pray, cross our fingers etc that it's sooner rather than later.

i think it will be the summer myself to be honest, from what i am told by reputable people such as Hammond Law and Shusterman
i know what you mean about changing your mind several times a day greeny, that happens alot in our house :)
As for advice regarding money, gets your hands on as much as you can for moving, you never know what might happen once you get stateside, plus setting up a new home can be a costly affair
