Fertility Nursing

Could you please describe what your duties entail being a fertility nurse? What is your typical day like. How did you come about getting that position? What experience is needed?

Congrats on your new position :) I just passed the NCLEX at the end of April and went on my first nursing interview yesterday at a fantastic infertility clinic yesterday. It seemed to go really really well and they called me this morning at 8Am asking me to come back on Monday morning to meet one more person. I am staying optimistic. Women's reproductive health and fertility is my passion in the medical field. I didn't think, as a new grad, that I would get anywhere even CLOSE to this field until years into my career. Anyway, just wanted to say hello b/c if all goes well, I will be new to this field as well and will want others to connect with too.

I have been a Fertility Nurse for 8 years and absolutely love it! I could not imagine doing anything different. I hope you will find it as enjoyable as I do. When starting out it can be tough to grasp, but trust me it will all fall into place. Lots of intricate details!!

I became a fertility nurse right out of school and while I love it, I do believe I would have benefited from a hospital experience. I have lost most of the clinical aspect that I learned in nursing school.

wondering what an ivf and/or donor egg nurse earns - of course depends on location, but wondering if it's comparable to hospital nursing in your area, or if it pays less or more. thanks!

Canadian nurses are for the vast part, unionized. The fertility clinics that I know of are located within teaching hospitals, so the nurses are hospital employees and under the same contract.

Nurses who choose to work in doctors offices are usually paid close to contract rates. I once worked in a clinic and made $2/hr less than my hospital job. When you factor in free parking and no union dues, I think I actually made a small bit more.

I currently have my BSN and have worked a few months at a nursing home/SAR facility, and i am currently working on a med/surg unit at a hospital (for about 2 months now). Since I dont have a lot of experience, i was wondering what is the best way to get into the field of fertility nursing ?? Are there any current certifications I can get (without having the experience)? SHould i try really hard to move to a L&D/ ante-partum unit? should i just stick it out in med/surg for a while? thanks for any advice...

ps i am in NJ, not so many jobs out there these days

Honestly, I don't think we can help you on this one. This is a Canadian thread and nursing up here is different from down south.

I recently came upon a job that needed a fertility nurse and scored an interview! I graduated in 2009 with my BScN and became a rehab nurse based on my consolidation experience. After a year I left for maternity leave and Im just about to get back until I got the great news of an interview. I know you've been in that field for the past 8 years, I was wondering what kind of things you do and if possible any help with interview questions since this is far from the field i started with. but i would oh so love to become a fertility nurse!!! thank you! any advice would be helpful!
