Jun 23, 201511 yr well, as a student nurse, technically you can. However, if it is for a full out nursing position, you need to be licensed. Most of the extern positions I have seen are indeed for student nurses, the qualification being that you successfully completed the nursing fundamentals course. That being said, the caveat is this : one must be actively enrolled in a nursing program. If you failed the NCLEX, I am assuming your program is complete, correct? This in itself will disqualify you.
Jun 23, 201511 yr It doesn't matter what state you're in. What matters is facility policy and the guidelines for appropriate candidates for the extern position.Considering that student nurses are hired for and expected to transition into the RN role, I seriously doubt that someone who has failed NCLEX would be considered.
Jun 23, 201511 yr As has been said, it's really not much of a debate: find out the requirements of the facility in question, and go from there. Extern positions in my experience are for those who are actually students....if you have taken the NCLEX then you are no LONGER a student....so would be disqualified on that basis.Still, you should just ask the source.
