Epic training

Published

Just wondering if there is anyway to get Epic training if you don't work in a facility that uses it. I'm getting shut out of some great travel jobs because I have never used it before.

Have you tried Epic? Show enough initiative and they make you a superuser! At their growth rate, they probably need more "travelers" to help orient new hospitals.

Yea I read about their training in Madison, WI just wasn't sure if there was any other program.

I contacted Epic a few weeks ago, I will post my email and Epic's response tomorrow. In a nutshell, they wont train u unless u are already employed by a company that uses Epic.

Thanks for that and looking forward to the added info. Of course they will train you if they want you to be a trainer. But in a catch-22, they probably want prior experience on Epic to be part of their training or sales team!

I was in the same situation and lucked up on my current assignment with a hospital that is going through an EMR conversion. They are going to EPIC. My recruiter knew that's why I was getting turned away from some jobs so she was on the lookout for me. I feel very lucky to have found this because I know there are many places that require EPIC experience. The hospital is training the travelers on the EPIC system along with their regular employees.

I'm in the same boat with aamy. The hospital I am with is moving to EPIC from paper charting. They wanted to pull their staff nurses who are super users off the floors to act as resources and needed extra staff to help out. They are sending all the travelers to the same classes as their staff. I have never worked with EPIC before. Maybe you will luck out and find a place that is doing the same thing. Best wishes.

I am in the same boat as aamy and mochajchips. I lucked out and was hired by a hospital going through the EMR conversion. They hired and trained the travelers in Epic, the same classes the core staff had to do. And the Super Users will be out of staffing during the whole month of Aug after their go live date of Aug 2. The Super Users are there soley to answer questions about Epic and help with charting while the other nurses, including travelers, will pick up the needs in staffing during that time.

Specializes in ICU, IR, PACU, CCRN, NE-BC.

I lucked out on my first assignment. It wasn't a requirement to know epic for Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. They allow you some time to learn their system. My suggestion is find a hospital that does this and go with it. Being a traveler you won't receive a lot of training but it will be enough to get by.

emb92250, we may be at the same facility. The place I am in went live Aug 2 also. (In NC)
