a dumb question

If you have a pt. with limited iv access....is it ever ok to give blood with, say, sandostatin? Seeing as how the pt has h/h of 3/10 with diprovan going in #2 line and protonix going in #3 line and no central line (and no other access?). Blood was not typed/crossed due to h/h. silly me, I thought blood reaction was better than certain death, but would like your opinions.

er doc for whatever reason just didn't want to put in a cvc. Pt wasn't in the er long. By the time blood was hanging, helicopter was on ground, and pt. was flown out. Thanks for your responses!

We give our Protonix IVP. But if it was hanging in a bag, I would have stopped the protonix and given the blood.

What is the intended effect of the Sandostatin in these patient scenarios?

I agree with asking which medication could be stopped for a short time while the blood was infused. Also, we use the EZY I/O in our ED in extreme emergency situations.

Am I wrong for suggesting this? Might be simple and not very helpful, but why not IV push the protonix instead of piggybacking it in? We give IV push protonix all the time in the ED I work at...

?

You can push the protonix and then infuse the blood through that line.

I could be mistaken, but the way I read it, the Protonix was a gtt, not just a push.

I have seen Protonix as a continuous drip, but in this case, a one-time dose could have been given IV push, at least until better access was obtained to start the drip again.
