dress codes

:o can you believe it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! my hospital has always had a dress code. now they are changing the policy and it now states that all staff has to wear white leather shoes!!! or all black leather shoes. i understand that for the floor nurses and staff. i work in the or. i was wearing the calzurio clogs, they are very comfortable for me. granted i was wearing the hot pink ones. so being the good rn, i ordered white leather clogs. they look very nice ( i know that won't last). but they aren't comfortable.

does anyone one else in an or has such a dress code? we are also not supposed to wear any jewerly, except a watch and wedding ring. no earrings unless they are covered and no necklaces. we are required to wear socks and as stated "foundation garments" that don't show thru clothes. just venting here, but would like to hear from others.

rubber clogs are what we are issued with in our or no choice as to colour so i got a purple!!!!! pair :angryfire but no complaints here as they are comfortable and functional. in our or we are allowed one necklace one pair of earings size within reason and we are given scrubs. how do you scrub with rings and a watch on and jewerly like watches could scratch patients when you turn or move them over on to their beds post op.

wow purple clogs....i had the hot pink ones and loved them!!!!! :rolleyes: no one in the or is allowed to wear a necklace!!!! i used to wear one that my dear hubby got me. earrings are allowed if you cover them with your hat. well i can't hear with my ears covered so now i don't wear my earrings. so now i only wear jewerly on weekends. as for rings, i had never worn them to work. the hospital administration has deemed that all staff including the or wear either white or black leather shoes!!!!!!

i don't have a problem with not wearing my jewelry. i have a problem with the shoe issue. i bought a pair of white leather clogs from clogsonline...by the way a great place to find clogs. but the leather clogs are heavier than the calzuiro clogs and not as comfortable. once they get stained with blood and betadine they sure won't be as pretty. i don't wear shoe covers as i personally find them hazardous. i am just trying to find out what other people who work in the or wear on their feet and does the administration have a problem with it?

I am curious Granny, do you know the rationale behind the edict for leather shoes? It seems to me that leather is far more of an infection control risk, especially in the OR or OB than synthetic shoes which can be thoroughly cleaned. I was just wondering why they think leather is better?

These shoes eliminate slips and falls. You may want to try them.

Our OR was told "leather only" because there were morons wearing canvas shoes, wanting reimbursed for socks and shoes that were soaked in blood.

They encourage leather shoes, but if they're not leather, the supervisor wants to see any new shoes purchased for work, to make sure they are suitable for the OR.

What about the yellow hibitane paint? It really stains I think white shoes are very impractical but most admin. staff have never set foot in an OR. So it figures!

Canvas shoes in the OR? How impractical! I can't imagine having to show someone my shoes to get approval to wear them. Sometimes I wonder about my choice of profession....what on earth was I thinking?!

It is riduculous that we have to get our shoes "approved", but like the saying goes, it only takes one to ruin it for everyone.

As professionals we should know a few practical things about foot wear. 1. They should be washable

2. They should be non-slip

3. They should be closed over the toe area to protect them :uhoh3: not everyone knows that.

If you are wondering about your chosen profession just know that the profession needs people who are practical and can work under pressure without worrying about if they have the right footwear or not because they WILL have it on.

What type of OR do you work in where people have their feet soaked in blood. I can understand it happening in ER but not OR.
