Disappointing Interview

If you are a new grad, perhaps they are seeing red flags for wanting to switch already. That may be the situation. only a guess though

During my interview with L and D they asked why the switch and I told them that I loved psychiatric peds because I think childhood is a huge milestone where you can make an impact, however as a new grad I want to learn more medical skills and critical thinking. I thought I made it very clear in my interview but maybe that wasn’t a good answer.

I think these two highllighted areas are why they thought psych might be a better fit for you.

Next time talk about what strengths you could bring to L and D and why you WANT L and D. You did not bring up any skills in L and D that would want. I think by saying Psych does not use critical thinking skills could have also been a turn off as well. You could have mentioned how critical thinking skills in psych could relate to critical thinking skills in L and D.

I agree with the advice above. It's really challenging to explain why you want to make a switch without sounding negative about the previous specialty. If I were the interviewer, I would have thought that you were passionate in psych, and the switch might not be a wise decision.

I am not necessarily a brand new nurse. But I already had two different jobs before I even hit 18 months of working as an RN. I had some interviews for pediatric nurse position (I was mainly working with geriatric patients at my full time jobs before I quit). I explained why I changed jobs a lot, but I also kept emphasizing on my desire to serve kids and their families during interview (I was also thinking that my prn job in a pediatric daycare center helped). Praise God, she offered me the position few days later.

From what I read, yes I understand that L&D is your passion, you just need to assure them that you have desire to serve moms and their babies.

However, I think you've made a great resume that could land you an interview for L&D position! (Based on my understanding, that's very hard to get the interview if you're not either a new grad or experienced in that specialty).
