Direct Observation UDS

I just got a job recently as an occupational nurse at a very large construction site. Occasionally I will have to do breathalyzers and drug screens. I have been learning of the horrors of a direct observation drug screen. It sounds like an utterly humiliating procedure. I thought of my friends in the recovery section of allnurses.❤

Interesting info. I always wondered about this after hearing from Recovers and military.

I can't produce STAT specimens privately, let alone OBSERVED.

That is covered in the shy bladder section of the module. There is a whole protocol for that I learned today.

After about a year of random observed and non observed UDSs I could produce 30 ml urine while singing a song and jumping through a hoop like a circus pony

I have immersed myself the past day in learning about this type of collection. Fortunately, it is not done much where I am now working, which is the construction of a data center type plant. Also, because I am a woman I am not allowed to observe a man directly. Most of the workers there are men. I am very thankful for that.

In NC ALL urine tests are observed.

I would die.

I once told an ROTC recruiter that I wasn't interested in military because I couldn't 'pee on command' and I needed extreme privacy to pee.

We laughed and went our merry way.

I had to do 3x weekly observed USD for 2.5 years as a part of probation through the court for a DUI.

They truly did make me lift my shirt way up, spin all the way around, and ask me to spread my legs so they would watch every moment of the pee coming out of the urethra and into the cup.

Demoralizing doesn't even begin to describe it. And don't even get me started on how hard the first few months were while my bladder was still so shy and I was afraid if I couldn't produce the specimen I would go to jail.
