Direct Entry Programs- How hard to get in?

Thanks for all of your responses to all of my previous posts. As you probably assume, I'm evaluating all of my options including ADN, BSN, and Direct-Entry MSN. The direct entry programs look extremely appealing, but seeing that they are at the best of colleges, I don't know how easy they are to get in.

Does anyone know what the typical GPA, scores, acceptance rates of these programs are? Anyone have any experience applying?

I'm in MD, so I'd consider Hopkins, but Columbia, MGHI in Mass, Case Western, Vanderbilt, Pace, and Yale also look appealing.

Seeing as nursing traditionally isn't an "ivy league" profession, are the credentials required for these programs less than what a typical "ivy" student would need?

I'd love to hear experiences with any programs.........

Yeah, I'm in upstate NY, I will have agonizing couple of extra days.

Hopefully they will send out an e-mail so at least we know they're on the way.

Trying to maintain my composure,

Courtney

Hi everyone, I haven't posted for awhile since finding out I was #1 alternate at UCSF. Since it was the only school applied to I was a little down, but they called today and offered me a spot. Crazy! With only 6 spots for Acute Care NP I thought I was a long shot, but I'm living proof that alternates have a great chance! Good luck future nurses!.......James

Woohoo ... congrats James !!

It is great that you shared your news because there are others here still on waiting lists. Hopefully this will provide a little positive reenforcement :)

Congrats and good luck

Yeeeaaay!

Congratulations!

I am guilty of not scrolling down the page far enough, if others had not responded I might have missed this great news from you. :) Yippie.

Thank you Jess,

This is a tough wait. However I think CEG is out east someplace if I remember reading it right, (Maryland?) Not too many posts back.

I am soooo hoping to get to give an email saying that mail was sent out!! I usually get the mail from my current school, (Chicago) to my suburb within a day.

OY!! I hope they do actually go out on the first of April. Somehow though I think the will send an email first to tell us if we were or weren't selected for the second rounds and an interview. Don't truly know.

Aaaaack attack :chuckle

Okay, let me get a grip.

Gen-in Chicago land...

Huh- I wouldn't think that regular mail would be the best way to inform about being selected for an interview. I bet it's an email or a phone call. I don't know- because only one of my schools interviewed and I got my interview time when I called them. It just seems with candidates all over the country and needing to schedule interview times an such- that they wouldn't go the reg mail route. Maybe I'm wrong?

Hi,

That makes sense!!

I just changed our answering machine message yesterday, (left resumes at our school job fair with a couple of hospitals). My husband had a brief message with his deep voice and a few peopel mentioned to me that it was "startling" to call me and receive that message.

Glad that I changed it. :coollook: Although, it caused a little disturbance at home because I did it ~before~ consulting the hubby. This is a personal peeve of his, (my intense flexibility and ~impatience~).

Sigh, oh well, we will get it all worked out. :p Aaaah, the newly married bliss.

p.s. homework time

Kim- Are you taking A&P with Dr Gonnerman at Mass Bay? I took both A&P 1 and 2 there with him. I'm taking Micro there this summer. Who is teaching your section?

-Jess

Jess-

I'm taking A& P 1 with Dr. Farmar and Micro with Dr. Saman. Saman is pretty good, very knowledgeable and his exams are manageable, but his accent makes it difficult to understand him all the time (which doesn't help with micro terminology that already sounds like chinese).

Thanks for everyone's input and advice, it's been very helpful and I wish I would've found this thread a long time ago!!!

I called MGH yesterday and they wouldn't give me anymore info. about my waitlist status...I am losing patience at a rapid speed right now. I have gone through these cycles of waiting and limbo to hear if I'll be in school for the fall and it's killing me. But it helps so much to hear that other people are going through the same thing.

Oh, and Congrats James!

Gen,

I checked UIC's website today, like I do every day, sometimes several times, and they UPDATED IT to say some specialties have been filled at this time!!!

They must know, I bet the letters are on the way or will be shortly. I am even more nervous now.

I guess I'll go check my e-mail obsessively and call my husband to see if the mail is there yet:)

Good luck!

Courtney

Hi Everyone and congrats to all who've been accepted and good luck to those waiting.

I'm #1 alternate for the Gerontological NP track at UCSF, but since I haven't heard back from UCSF yet, and others have (Congrats James!) , I'm assuming I'm not going to get in this year. :crying2:

However, I was accepted to SF States Direct Entry Generic MSN program. Do you all think it would be wrong to start at SF State and reapply to UCSF next year?

I feel horrible about taking a space from someone at SF State if I'm going to switch, on the other hand, getting into UCSF next year isn't a sure thing and being an older, recently separated woman I don't feel I have much time or money to spare. I hate to take a chance and end up with nothing.

What do you think? Thanks for any input.

Hi Courtney,

---hi again, editing the entire post--

Okay I found the page I think you are mentioning and copied it...here is some...

These application materials are for non-nurses who hold a Bachelor's degree in another field. Due to a large amount of applications, the following specialties are closed and will no longer accept applications for the January 2006 term:

Family Nurse Practitioner

Women's Health Nurse Practitioner

Nurse Midwifery

Pediatric Nurse Practitioner

All other specialties are currently accepting applications until spaces are full or the deadline is reached (June 1st). Please check back to this page for periodic updates. Applications for January 2007 will be available by September 2005.

Wow, so I take it to mean that not all specialties are going to commit to the March 1st deadline and some will extend to June. Hmmm? This could be good, hopefully, (for me and you). I see that your specialty is no longer taking applications but, I don't think it means that the slots are full Courtney, just that they have all the applications that they feel they can review. I wonder though how the Adult NP specialty managed to keep their application deadline open until June?

The applications were so numerous...?

Hopefully the first rounds will come along soon!!!

Good thoughts,

Gen

Courtney,

Gosh, this IS reaching the wire now. I am looking forward and hope to be able to send you some 'congratulations' smilies. :)

One of my biggest anxious concerns is that my BA won't be complete until the third week of May so I am glad that the Adult NP specialty is going to continue to take apps until June. Maybe that will help? I don't know but, gosh, I hope they call for interviews. That in and of itself is a big deal too!!

More good thoughts. :)

Hi Gen,

The website update is very strange- at work I cannot see the change, but at home I can see it. Maybe I have somehow hacked into their website due to the sheer number of times I have looked at it. It's on the "application materials" section of the GEP pages. It still has the same timeline posted. I will post the new text here:

My thought is maybe they are still planning to interview but they had so many apps they know they don't need to accept any more.

Or maybe our applications were so awesome they are going to admit us right away without even an interview :roll

Either way, we should know something soon... Have a nice day.

Courtney

Hi Courtney,

Do you have that link? I couldn't locate it in my brief search through the site.

This is somewhat baffling because the slots are filled before they have even completed the first rounds of interviews?

Their original intentions involved interviews and a secocnd round of applicants. Although, I guess they may have varied on their plans, (flexible) since this is their first full-fledged application process and I imagine they are working out kinks and also developing their routine.

Lets see how it goes!!

At first I was in doubt and thought that maybe it was the regular grad school that had all their slots filled, (again, under the impression that there would be first and second rounds of decisions for the GEP with final decisions around May 15th.)

Did they acknowledge this at all? Hmmm, anxiety mixed with confusion and bafflement :) Oy!

With good thoughts,

Gen
