I'll try not to make this too long. I recently started working at a new smaller hospital on their med surg floor. Prior to that I was an ER nurse for almost 3 years at a big level one trauma center. I learned a lot there in those 3 years. Well I was hired as a staff nurse at this new hospital and have been working on it for a little over a month now. I have caught on extremely fast and have been taking patients since the second day on the floor. The assistant nurse manager on days is leaving and I was encouraged to apply so I did. At first I was the only applicant now there are two others who do not work on our floor. I was feeling kind of good about it, but now I am worried. I know I can do the job hands down and I know that I can teach the other nurses a lot. They are not as confident as the nurses are at the hospital I came from, but they can be, a lot of them are really smart nurses.
Do you guys think I have any kind of advantage over these other applicants who have never worked on the floor. I am just really worried because it seems like I never win anything.

I think you stand a good chance. These jobs are not usually coverted, at least in alot of the hospitals I have worked in. You certainly, have nothing to lose. In fact, probably everything to gain even if you don't get the position.
Good luck.

Win at what? Is this work or a contest? Are you trying to prove you are smarter than your co-workers? I am having trouble seeing what your problem is that has you so depressed.

My thoughts exactly.
I can't comment on the odds that you'll get the position - way too many variables.
Is turnover an issue at this facility - such that one-month employees are encouraged to apply for management positions?
I was encouraged to apply because I have the qualifications!! I have been coming to this board for support for the last 3 years and have always been given support. I did not post this question for people to be so rude. I was just feeling a little down about the possiblity of getting this postion, I guess it was a mistake to come to a place where I thought people would understand. No I do not think I am smarter than anyone else, if I did I wouldn't have posted the question. I am a grown woman so I think I know it is not a contest. If you are having trouble seeing what my problem is then maybe you should have not taken the time out to post a response. I would never put someone down when they are already feeling that way. Whether I get the position or not, I will live. I just really felt like I had a lot to offer to this floor and the direction it is moving in. One month employee or not, they recongnized something in me that they liked!

Thank you for your POSITIVE encouragement.

This is what I was questioning ... why you were feeling "down" or "depressed" when as far as I can tell from your posts, the position has not yet been filled.
Are you saying that the "problem" is that there are other applicants who are also being considered?

Hey, it sounds like you just happened to be in the right place at the right time, so to speak. I think you have a great chance to get the position since you are already working on that unit and you have some much appreciated experience. You also seem to like you would be a very positive role-model for these nurses. You recognize they are smart nurses who could learn from you. That's a great attitude to have! Good luck and keep us posted!!!

I guess so. I'm just sort of a worry wart at times. I was really on the up about it because I keep being told I was the only applicant and then...bam!! There's two others. Then down I came, like wow maybe it's not in the bag. That's all. Maybe I should not have used the word depressed, maybe my hopes were dashed just a little. I still have the interview and all.
My question really was would a have any kind of advantage because they have seen the way I work and liked it verus the other two who do not work at the hospital. And yes they hire people from the outside into management at this hospital.
Thank you so much. I would hate for someone to think I thought I was better than them because that is so not who I am. When I learned of the position, I thought the same thing right place at the right time. I'll keep you posted!!

Good luck! I am glad someone wants management. We need good people, just not me. That's not my thing! I hope it all works out for you.

I didn't get that from this post at all.
Rachel,
I think you stand a great chance of getting the position! You have the experience and it sounds like you know your stuff! I understand your feelings and I think that sometimes when you have a bit of competition going against you.... you perform that much better!! (sometimes... not all the time)
Just keep positive. Don't get down until you know the results. Confidence is the key to a lot of positions... confidence without being over confident... KWIM???
Good luck!!
