Depends leaking.

I am a home health aide and I have recently started caring for a patient over night and I am wondering if anyone has every dealt with depends leaking. The other night there was urine everywhere and I had put a fresh dry one on the patient before bed.

I was just wondering if anyone else had a problem like this and if they had solved it.

The only time I've ever seen one leak was because it was full. How long had it been on when you noticed the leaking? Were you checking them regularly?

Some people are heavy wetters at night. You might need a thicker or more absorbent Depends...or else change the pt in the middle of the night. Place chux under them to keep the bed as dry as possible.

This can happen a lot. First of all, is the depends the right size for the person? If it's too big, it will leak. If it is not absorbent enough, it will likely overflow if the patient is a heavy wetter.

Is the client male? If so, make sure the member is pointing straight down into the brief. If it's pointing up or to the side, there is a higher chance of leakage.

It depends (haha) on the type of product you are using, But sometimes people just pee a huge amount all at once and nothing holds it in!

Not talking about the Depends briefs, but I would guess this might be the same as the incontinence pads.

Make sure the legs of the brief are correctly pulled up snugly in the groin fold. Pads leak if the underwear isn't pulled up right.

I am a Home Care CNA as well and I have a client that to stop night leaks we put two bladder control pads in his brief. I take one pad and cut a good size slit in it, and then put it on top of the other one. This helps the urine to be able to soak into the bottom pad. We also have a chucks pad under him to protect his bed too. works really well.

I am personally not a fan of diapers or depends, but since its home care, I guess its client preferences. Have you suggested a condom catheter for sleep hours?

What would be best for them to wear instead of the depends/diaper if they are incontinent?

What would you put on an incontinent patient then?

You can't just put a brief on at bed time and then not check it until morning. Patients that are incontinent need to be checked regularly and changed as needed. Of course the brief is going to leak if you don't change it.Is changing the wet briefs not part of the job? Did you think a brief would hold an indefinite amount of urine? If it is a male patient you could try a condom catheter.

Yes..condom cath or just use disposable pads.like driflo, and loosly pull through legs to forwards leaving plenty of air. Dont pull tight, your asking for skin breakdown. You are changing q2 anyway right? So it should b just as easy. Also try toileting schedule during day and see how patient does.

Try toileting Q3 overnight and during the day so that the patient still has a sense of self control over their bladder and they may be able to start a routine and train their bodies to void at certain times on specific cues. I would also suggest a condom cath and Q2 hour check to make sure the brief is dry at the same time as you reposition the patient.
