If this guy had a "broken neck and may be paralyzed" I doubt very much he'd be sitting up for a photo without his C-collar. Those "close family friends" aren't usually the most reliable. Or is the photo of the cop who suffered "significant facial injuries"?
And the ol' Manchester Union Leader is a far cry from the New York Times. :)
I think that photo was taken earlier, did you read the article?

There is more to the story.... What if his alteration in behavior was chemically induced; during the incident and after the incident; perhaps with his psych history he may be blinking as a form of coping?
Did he have a bleed in his brain? Other neuro issues???
Also, people can sustain spinal cord injury and walk and talk before a decline. I cared for a man who was arrested with a history of bipolar who was resisting arrest and was slammed against the police car. Once he stated he couldn't get up and lost bowel and bladder, he was sent to the hospital where they found that his neck was broken and had spinal shock.

There is more to the story.....Patient's broken neck a mystery after Elliot Hospital fracas, arrest | New Hampshire Public Safety
He was involved in a accident where he hit a tree....police felt he was confused and called the family....my question why did they not call an ambulance? The family took him to Elliot where he was "medically cleared" I hope they did a trauma work up.
He went out of control attacked the police officer....was arrested, booked and returned to Elliot several hours later
Elliot Hospital said Ornelas returned by ambulance about 9:30 a.m. Oct. 17."He arrived in serious condition. The manner in which he sustained the injuries that required medical attention on the morning of...Oct. 17 is unknown to the Elliot."Ornelas was brought to the hospital's emergency department by his sister, Anna, on Oct. 15, according to Gosselin and Elliot. Ornelas' car had hit a small tree on Hillcrest Avenue about 5:25 p.m., Police Lt. Maureen Tessier said. Ornelas, who was alone in the car, was unhurt and the car sustained so little damage it was driveable, she said.

The devil will be in the details.
