What does everyone think of CPR... I heard they are changing the compression to breath ratio again next year... Thus making compressions like 30 and the breath 1 yes 1, last I knew the brain and heart needed oxygen... not to mention I just learned in A&P that you need oxygen to make ATP... which in turn makes energy... which in turn lets you live... anyone have any ideas/explanations what is going on ?????

I had also heard that for non-healthcare, that no breaths were required to get rid of the deterrent of "kissing" a stranger to administer CPR. The point about ATP is interesting, but I suppose if the heart isn't pumping and the blood isn't flowing, then that O2 won't get anywhere. Catch 22?

you do have a point... Thank you

Yeah, you need oxygen... But I just got certified again and they told me that they are no longer doing ABC, but CAB. So no chin-tilting, listening... Just immediately into compressions, because compressions will be the thing that starts the heart and without the heart beating, you have a dead person pretty quickly.

I like the 2 breaths, though, it'll be weird to change that again.

Yeah I took a cpr course twice..once every 2 years. The first time they explained it okay, and the second time last May they really didnt explain much, plus its changing. I was going to review videos online or something to see how to perform cpr again, because I sortta forgot...does anyone know an up to date video?

First keep in mind that you are exhaling into the pt. You only exhale 15-18% oxygen. The rest is other gases. Point being..not much oxygen is going "into the pt anyway." Second, they have found that the most important thing you can do is pump the heart. The longer the delay...even if it is to give breaths...the less likely you will get the heart beating again.

I don't think it will change next year. I may be wrong, but I believe that they discuss changes every 5 years. They just met in 2010, making 2015 the next year to have possible changes.

I hope that helps.
