Certainly ask the supervisor if you are not clear on the action. CPAP is a respiratory intervention that requires a doctor's order, that RT would need to provide.

Now you know the process. Educate yourself on CPAP/ BI-PAP respiratory therapy. It is the same as providing previously prescribed home medications. If the prescribed therapy is not continued... the patient could get in big trouble.. fast.

As a CPAP PATIENT and ICU nurse, the best thing to do would be to send a family member home to get the machine, if that's feasible. Respiratory therapy tells me they don't have enough CPAP machines to go around for every CPAP patient who forgets to bring his machine.

B is absolutely inappropriate -- a sleep apnea patient needs the machine every time they sleep. My husband and I both nap with our PAP. No sleeping without the CPAP machine unless we're intubated.

RT cannot set up a CPAP without orders. So C is a no go.

If the admitting physician has access to the sleep study data to know what the patient's titrated settings are, then they can write an order for CPAP and then you can order the machine from RT. if they have one.

I got the education about CPAP and Bipap .i learned that these are the two machines used for sleep apnea and the only difference is the pressure setting between the two .

They deliver continuos airway pressure to the client with breathing difficulty at night .
