Hi Guys!
I was just wondering if anyone out there has used a coude catheter recently? I haven't for YEARS!!!! Any idea where I can get information for a policy regarding the use of coude's????

I worked on a surgical unit some years ago where we had a doctor who order Coude's frequently for his BPH patients. The policy on using them shouldn't be any different than any other foley catheter. The Coude tip is an angled tip designed to make insertion into the urethra easier, supposedly. We inserted them just like any other foley catheter (we did not use a stylus). Nurses shouldn't be inserting them with the stylus; the doctor should be doing those insertions. This same surgeon also instructed us to inject the 10cc of sterile lubricating gel directly into the urethra prior to insertion rather than gooing up the catheter itself.

We still use coude caths for our patients with enlarged prostates. We dont use stylus' but the urologist may come up and put it in with the stylus. There really isnt any difference in procedure using a coude.
