Has anyone CLEP tested out of a class they know nothing about? All my regular classes were science classes, but I need to either CLEP Sociology or take it as a regular class within an already full load of nursing classes this semester. Will purchasing the study guides and cramming for 2 weeks be enough to pass? Any advice is appreciated.

I would go to the CLEP website and see what they recommend for study. Some of the courses you are better off with a used course book versus the study guide. Also see about getting a syllabus for the oncampus course to give you an idea of where to focus. My college has challange exams and clep exams. I have challanged a few and Clep'ed one that I knew nothing about. The challange exams were easier than the CLEP, so if you have that option, I'd try it. (they were also cheaper $10 versus $70) I've never done it in two weeks though. If you can focus for 2 weeks on just that, I say it is doable.
Thanks for the pointers! I will follow your advice for sure. Never heard of a challenge exam, sounds interesting! Will contact the testing center and ask about that as well. Thanks again! Will post later with the results.:)

for clep I would just use REA with the disk, and do it in 2 weeks.
Thanks Chill,
Just by off chance I checked ebay. The REA book/CD was selling and just about to close, so I bid and won. Many thanks for your help!

I CLEPed out of Soc, Psych, and a couple others by cramming for a couple weeks before testing. It's not the best plan if you want to retain any of the info, but it's doable. You might also want to search Flashcardexchange.com and studystack.com for previously created study cards... saved a lot of time for me.
Awesome! I had never used flashcardexchange.com or studystack.com but from the looks of them, they have some very useful study cards that I will incorporate into my study plan. Thanks!:)
Good Luck! It'd be great to hear how you do!
FYI A challange exam at my school is when you basically challange the course by sitting for the final exam. They charge you $10 and if you pass, you pay for the tuition on the credits and it goes on your transcripts as a "P" for pass. I go to a state school and the tuition is $25 a credit so A 3 credit class ends up costing a little more than clep but you pay for the majority of it ONLY if you pass, if you fail you're only out the $10.
Many thanks to all who responded. I took the CLEP after reading the REA book and some free online references. Passed with no problem. Wish they recorded the grade because I got an A but they only record the credits. I would certainly recommend taking a CLEP test for credits needed in a pinch!

Hi, i have to take some history and literature classes for texas requirements for UTA RN-BSN. Never taken a clep class before so i am a bit nervous. how should i go about doing this...please help.......thanks
To CLEP a class is a piece of cake. All you do is read the materials, take the test, and if you pass you get credit. I wish I had known about this before spending hours in classrooms and thousands of dollars on college classes that are not used directly in nursing. Do a Google search on the CLEP classes you will be taking. There is a lot of free study material out there. Good luck! :)

Like Mom2cats said, it's not a big deal. There is info on CLEP exams here: About the College Level Examination Program (CLEP)
Many are administered at local colleges or universities. You should find the location closest to you (CLEP Test Center Search), then contact them and ask them how much their site fee is (mine was $15), how many days in advance you need to notify them, if they only do CLEPs on certain days (my local university only did CLEPs on Wednesdays, for whatever reason). When you take the CLEP, they will ask where you want the scores sent, and you can tell them your school name.
There are tons of study materials -- you can find books in the test prep section at stores like Borders or Barnes & Noble, or Rea.com is a company that makes study guides. Good luck!
