Changing Specialties

I have worked Med Surg for a couple years now. I love my older patients and all of the experiences that I've had, but my back hurts. I'm also feeling a tug to change jobs. Has anyone switched Specialties after Med Surg and found a challenging job that they love that is not so physically demanding? Just wanted to hear from others who have also felt the way that I feel.

I changed specialties and found an area that I love, although I won't claim it was any easier physically. I've been in ICU now for over thirty years, and I love it.

My mother changed from med-surg to pre-op and LOVES it. She states that it is less physically demanding and not nearly as stressful. I'm still loving med-surg. Maybe I'll switch once I get bored or sore :) We've had a few exhausted nurses leave us for post-partum. They seem to love it as well. Best wishes with whatever specialty you choose!

Early in my career, I went from Med-Surge to working as a unit leader in an adult Psychiatric facility. I worked night shift. Some nights were VERY challenging and quite interesting. It was very rarely physically taxing.

I've also worked home health, another very challenging job. I did end up with a sore back, but not from doing a ton of lifting, bending, etc., but mostly from sitting in my car at least half of the day! Not to say I never did ANY patient lifting or turning, but the majority of my patients were ambulatory.

I never liked med-surg during nursing school and didn't think I would end up there. Anyway, my first nursing job ended up being med-surg and I liked it more than I thought I would. I still work PRN on med-surg (usually 2 shifts a month.) I work ft in mental health now. There are pros and cons to both specialties. I was always drawn to either psych or post-partum. I've floated quite a few times to postpartum at one of my jobs and I really like that unit as well and I sort of want to test that one out.
