Change Diagnosis

Nurses Recovery

I am on probation in nursing. What would it do if I were able to change my bipolar diagnosis?

Would that be able to change anything with the Board?

What would I have to do to have that changed?

What lead to the probation? It probably depends on what state you live in.

Texas.......  I was acting ridiculous and said foul language comments to them.

I live in Oklahoma. I just wondered what would happen if I were able to have my diagnosis changed.

Isn't it private between the pt and the Dr?

They are easily able to change a diagnosis I believe but I do not really know how to go about it.

I have state medicade also so I am able to see different drs.

You used fowl language and were diagnosed with bipolar disorder?  There's more to bipolar disorder than cussing.  You cussed out the board of nursing?

Yes...  I did not cuss them or threaten them however. I disclosed a written explicit thought on suicide.

That was back in 2011. I've been reinstated and worked 1 year.

I was diagnosed with bipolar in 2004.

I am in the mental health track and wondered if having a diagnosis change would change anything.

Maybe.. where I live they have their own doctors who diagnose and were stuck with their diagnoses no matter how wrong it is.  I'm guessing even if the diagnosis is major depressive disorder they'll make you finish your sentence. I'm just guessing. Do you have a case manager or something to ask?

Yea I wondered how that would work.

Dealing with a specific set of Drs would not be ideal.

Yes I have a case manager however I think what I am going to do is undergo a new psychological evaluation and present everything to the psychologist.

I learned the evaluations are different.

A psychological evaluation is not the same as a nurse practitioner assessment by my own provider.

Correct. Here it's only a physician who works for them that matters. It would be good to know your diagnosis for yourself either way.  Please update after.  I'm wondering if the psychiatrist is open to other opinions.

If you have Bi-Polar and are being treated by a mental health professional  I would stay with that course. Reason being the diagnosis provides an explanation for the behavior. What kind of contract do you have with the BON? It might be prudent to discuss this with an attorney familiar with professional practice cases.

You disclosed suicidal ideation to the BON, worse so the TX BON. Even if it's not Bipolar Disorder, they have you for some form of mental illness due to suicidal ideation. That alone will keep you on the mental health track. Seek diagnosis clarification for your health and well-being, not purely in trying to get out from under the BON's watch. I'm not convinced a diagnosis change would alter much for your contract. I'm glad it sounds like you're doing better now.

I'm curious nit arguing with you. Thus is all supposed to be about protection of patients.  Do the powers that be think someone with suicidal ideation is a danger or wants to kill patients?

I imagine they'll take it as a question of mental stability in that, if you're a danger to yourself, you may not be clear-headed enough to reliably or safely practice until cleared to do so by psychiatry. It doesn't necessarily mean you're at risk of directly harming patients, but rather that you're not in the right frame of mind/stable mind to currently safely practice until you're doing better. How they go about it leaves much to be desired.
