Hi everyone,
I'm currently working in a hospital and we have many patients who are suffering from alcoholic withdrawal.
Recently, I have a patient who's in his 30s, he's an alcoholic, lost his home, unemployed and has no insurance. Yesterday, his mom's at the bedside crying because she has cancer and she can't take care of him. After my shift, I tried to call over 15 detox-facilities to see if any facility is willing to take him. Unfortunately, they don't take anyone who doesn't have any insurance.
My question is that: Where is he gonna stay? Is he gonna be homeless? I really wanted to help him but things are beyond my control.
I appreciated for your help. Thanks.

Is your facility social worker working on this? I surely hope you have a SW--that's part of what they do...
The social worker met with the patient's mom already but she said they couldn't find a solution. Maybe I should discuss it with the social worker again.
Thanks :)

is there a RN case manager handling his discharge ? there also should be a state run detox for people with no insurance. his poor mom having that worry when she has cancer. there is alot on her plate now and she sure dosen't need the extra stress.
i hope he dosen't end up homeless, it's very sad the way health care is america. does he have brother or a sister that could he could stay with? i have 6 kids and i can understand her torment. then to have cancer on top of that .. please keep us posted on how he and his mom are doing..... sending prayers their way..

I would think he would qualify for Medicaid, which should pay 3 months retro for healthcare. I'm not sure the coverage for inpatient drug rehab, but it is worth looking into.

there has got to be a facility for detox somewhere in your state that is not private pay only. maybe a state run hospital? i can only imagine what his mother is going through---it's awful how many mentally ill people fall through the cracks due to things like this and end up on the street. i wish mental health care was as easily accessible to all.

Since he is sober at this time do the locally run shelters off out pt services. Has he ever been in the Arm Forces they also offer the services as long as the cleint is sober. Lately a lot of the out pt clinics have been hit by budget cuts so the needy and deserving are left out. Has he applied for disability ,might get coverage with them
