Can I get into a nursing program with W's?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi everyone,

I am looking for advice.  My science GPA is 4.0, my cumulative is 3.3. I took anatomy and Microbiology twice. I also took chem twice. I know most schools allow a one science course repeat. Is anyone having a similar situation or has anyone had a similar situation but still managed to get into a program??

hello,

I'm in pre-nursing and awaiting a program, and that's a great science GPA! as for whether a school takes you, I think you may need to talk to your advisor/admissions office. in school's where I'm at they usually count the highest grade for your application. im submitting an application soon

Are you already an LPN & also have ADN applying for RN to BSN program?

I am not a LPN Or ADN, I’m just starting off

They are probably asking because your profile says, right behind your name, that you have an LPN and an ADN, so there would have been much different advice for you if that were so.

Honestly, it is going to be up to each individual school you apply to. Like you said, a lot of programs have a cap on science repeats.  Because of how impacted programs are, the ones with that requirement are not going to overlook the repeats.

You'll have to do some legwork and look up schools one-by-one and see what their requirements are. I am sure you will succeed!

Some programs look at Withdrawal due to failing as failing the course.

Yes you can. I did. I really depends upon the rest of your academic transcript. If you have some W's but then went on to be successful in your pre-requisites, I'd say you have a good chance of being accepted to a program. Good luck!

Thank you

I got into one and was waitlisted at University of Washington with around 15 W's. Most of them were for retroactive medical withdrawal though. I have a few in the past 4 years, two of which I had during quarters where I only took 6 units.

No idea how much this actually affects my application, but I don't think nursing schools look at W's the same way medical schools do. W's can be used to identify a certain pattern of behavior in a certain type of student. There are dozens of reasons people take W's. So my personal opinion is that yes, they can affect your application, but only in certain circumstances.

The only exception to this that I know of are CSU schools. Some of them count W's against you and you can't even apply because they will only take your first grade. So, if your first grade is a W, tough S.
