Can this be done?

If this has been asked before please forgive me! I am a single mom with limited income. My goal is to go through ISU for my BSN degree. I am an LPN right now with NO prereq's done yet. I met with The College Network ppl and have the list of all the courses I need to CLEP, OR DANTES test out of to get credit for it. My question is.....Can I just go on EBAY and buy the study guides myself, call up a testing facility, take the test? How does it work that I get the credit for it if I do that? Has anyone done it like that? I think it is senseless to give them thousands of dollars if there is really no purpose in going through them? Am I missing something here or crazy for seeing it this way? What am I missing here? Thank you for your help! I really need it.

Yes you can just go on ebay or to a bookstore, and get the CLEP and DANTES study guides, And yes, you can just schedule with your local testing facility yourself. And yes you'll still get credit, you just fill out your school's code on the registration form for the test, or have your testing transcript sent to the school when you're ready.

That is how I am doing it.I met with TCN and got all the info but did not sign with them. I am buying study guides(I have purchased pass your class, clep study guides, algebra for dummies, and 1 TCN module) little by little off ebay and amazon.I am like you single Mom of 3 and need to work full time to support them. I have no pre rec's done either. I'm planning on taking my time doing this I would like to be done in 2-3 yrs with everything but not sure I am being realistic. It may take 4-5.

Thank you for that. But what if you are not in a school when testing out? We they be good until I finally enroll into a school?

You would tell them to send the results to ISU if that is where you are planning to go to. Or you dont list a school for the results to be sent to and then when you finish will all testouts you can request a official transcript to be sent to the school of you choice.

Yeah, what Tracy said.

Just FYI, it costs about $20 to send a CLEP transcript to a school if you request to have it sent later -- at least it did in 2005. I'd go ahead and specify ISU if you're think you'll go there. :)
