I am thinking about making a switch from fulltime to PRN at my hospital. Reason is I live 1 1/2 hours away and that is one way and the drive is starting to get to me. I love what I do and don't want to completely give it up either. Anyway to supplement what I would be losing income and hour wise I have been tossing around the idea of going through an agency. I know nothing about them and don't even know where to start about looking for one. I live in a rural community in Southeast Kansas and have no clue if hospitals around here use agency nurses.
Please let me know if any if you can guide me in the right direction.

I know you can work in Joplin as agency nurse and get good pay....just need to get Missouri license...that is not hard....just do forms and pay the fee.
Actually I have thought of Joplin the only problem is I would be driving the same amount of time that I am now.
Do you happen to knowthe name of the agencies that are around there and what pay they are offering?

Oh my gosh, the drive is just getting to you? If I did that ONCE it would get to me! I used to do a 50 minute drive one way and it drove me nuts after a few months(that and the noght shifting). I don't see how spending 3 hours of your day in the car is healthy in any way. Good luck to you.

Hi there. Not too familiar with your area (Kansas) but I would contact the closest hospitals, surgery centers, urgent care clinics etc and see if they couldn't use you on a PRN basis. If they can't, find out which registry they use most often and sign up with them. Yes the money is better and it sounds like you may end up returning to the same facilities so you have a sense of familiartity there. I agree tho, a long drive after a long day is a grind. Good luck.
I worked for an agency out of Tulsa, but the hospital was using agencies from around the country. If you want to work a certain area, such as ICU like you said, you might do well just contacting them yourself and being your own agent.

I have found agencies, in the past, just by looking in the phone book under nursing. Have you considered agency work in Wichita? Do they have in-house float pools that pay more, that might appeal to you?
I used to drive 80 miles one way, and that got old quickly. It also wasn't very safe after a 12 hour shift.
Good luck!

try yellow pages...expand ideas of what type of nursing you want to do...clinic, private duty, ltc, there are many options out there...my dtr was driving like that really wore her out...almost wrecked once or twice..kept me scared to death
do what you need to do...if you don't find an agency maybe there is a need for one ..establish your own...good luck

We have several agencies around where I live. But not familiar with your area. Good luck on finding something. I did a 2 hr drive daily for 5 years. Would never want to do it again.

What part of SE KS are you from? I live in Independence and I am a student. I was studying to be a respiratory therapist but I am thinking of switching to nursing. I know that there are not many places close for me as an RT and was looking at having to drive to Tulsa which is an hour and a half. I am hoping to find a nursing position closer to home. Good luck on your search.
