bump in the road!

I am THIS close to applying to my schools RN program! I'm taking my last science pre-req and I have above 100% in the class. My GPA is 4.0 and I am SO close to applying to nursing school I can taste it! :)

There's just one BIG problem!

My advisor informed me when I took my COMPASS placement test a while back I only tested into intermediate Algebra. I need to be eligible to take college level math to be considered for my program! Oh no!:nailbiting:

So he advised I brush up on my math and take the COMPASS math portion again. He recommended this site to take practice tests.

I've got the "numerical skills/pre-algebra & algebra" down! But the College Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry not so much! If I'm fine in the pre-algebra and algebra is that good enough to place in college level math?

Thanks for your help!!

College math has a little MIT of everything in it. It will mostly focus on algebra and some very basic trg and basic geometry. If you are strong in the algebra then just brush up on trig and geometry. You can do this. If you can't test Ito college level math, take a summer math class at the level you are assigned and then take the classes up college level. It may take you an extra semester 2 which totally sucks, but understanding college level math is very important in nursing school. GL.

Yep, for my BSN program I am applying to in Feb the one math pre req requirement is a choice of either Algebra 1 or Probability/Statistics. I am 40 years old and only had some Alg in high school 20+ years ago. I was determined to "test in to" these classes and to do that I had to get a 38 or higher on the compass placement test. At my college you have two attempts at this score. If not obtained then you must just work your way up each semester starting with the level you tested in to. This was not in my plan and would have delayed my program by a whole year.

So what I did was checked books at the public library about basic math, pre algebra and algebra. I watched tons of videos on Kahn academy and you tube. I then hired a private math tutor and met up 4 times. In just a month or so I Self taught with some help at the end with the Algebra part, and I scored a 50.

I am now taking Stats this semester and love it compared to Algebra.

When I took the Compass test for college, they put me in math classes to work my way up to the class I needed. I had to take 3 math classes before I got to the class I actually needed.

So my plan of attack here is to get an intermediate algebra book and basically teach myself the concepts. Also the testing center has a study guide which I'm going to pick up today as well so I'll be using both those resources in addition to khan academy to get me where I need to be! I won't let this hinder me! I've made it so far already!

Khanacademy.com would be very helpful, check it out!

I have to take 2 algebra classes before I can do college algebra. It's been 20 years since I have taken algebra. I am really happy that I am taking algebra I and II again. It is all coming back to me now and I am doing pretty well. I am applying to the program for Fall 2014 and have to have math 136 done before that. So I will be doing it in the summer. Yuk!!

My pre-req's changed the week BEFORE I was going to be able to apply to my nursing program, I was finishing up my last pre-req over the summer. They changed to where you had to pass Intermediate Algebra with a C. One problem, I only had Elementary Algebra since that's all they required for the ADN. So since they changed the pre-req's they allowed us pre-nursing students to take the COMPASS one more time to try and test out of Int. Algebra. I went to Khan Academy and studied my tail off for 2 weeks and tested into College Algebra? You can do it!!!

Yeah!! That's the kind of story that gives me hope! Way to go! Can I ask which videos you studied? Or did you just watch everything in the algebra section?

They just revamped the Math portion on Khan and it pretty much gives you a sample test when you first log in for the math section and scores what you know and recommends areas you need help with. I remembered I didn't know logarithms, functions or absolute value inequalities. Then I would google intermediate algebra tests and go off that on what else I needed to learn. It should be easier now on Khan bc before I had to just search the videos and now they do recommendations so that'll help out a ton!

One more thing, I did not study Trig, but I did study geometry a little.

Thanks!! It's a little tough teaching myself intermediate algebra along with the 4 other classes I'm taking now, but I'm determined!!
