Budgeting for CPNE

Published

Hi all. I am trying to pick through the various CPNE posts to determine necessary study materials... And I'm getting overwhelmed. My husband wants a budget and I find it difficult to create one because new things are always coming up. Can some of you review what I'm thinking and tell me if you think it will be a sufficient and hopefully a place to start?

The beast itself - $1995

Print a copy of CPNE study guide - $40-$50

Background check - $12

Robs CPNE videos - $70

Workshop - any recommendations welcome. I'm leaning towards Chancellor's for $1100.

Excelsior online care plan workshop (debating) - $275

Practice supplies - $200 ? (no idea, this is all hard to figure out as I haven't even begin studying yet!)

Reference/required books - $150 ?

Travel costs -

Graduation fee -

NCLEX

I'm curious as to if Chancellor's workshop would be good enough and I can get away with just doing that. I'm all about being over prepared, but funds are going to be quite tight as I'm sure most of you can relate to. Since I live in the north, I'm already worried about traveling as most of this will be falling during our lovely winter. Part of me wants to consider pushing it to April so I won't have to worry about it. But on the other hand, I'll all about being done before I turn 30 on March 18th!

Anyways, thanks to those who take the time to read this. If you know of any other upcoming costs I may entail, please let me know! My husband needs to know the bad news soon and I want to make sure I'm covering everything!

First thought: holy crow, it's almost $2K now?! Yikes.

Don't forget to factor in your students services annual fee ($440) if your enrollment anniversary comes around. If you're only waiting on your CPNE date when it does come around, you may be able to defer paying it, or pay it and later have it credited toward your graduation fee (which is $495).

As far as the practice supplies, I'd order the skills bag with the wound, but I wouldn't bother with the teaching 'scope: https://www.excelsior.edu/Excelsior_College/My_Excelsior_College/Publications/CPNE_Skill_Kit_Order_Form.pdf

I've heard great things about Chancellor's workshop.

Check the EPN -- besides people practicing careplanning there, people also offer up books and supplies, often for very cheap or free. You can also post about needing supplies there, too.

Thanks, Lisa! Yes, I've already been on the phone trying to get my annual enrollment fee waived.. They were less than eager to do that for me. I still have Info Lit (going to take that through Penn Foster) and started Micro at my CC today. The guy told me I would have to have grades by Oct. 30th to get that fee waived. Kind of crappy since my Micro course ends December 14th!! I then asked who else I could talk to or have address this issue. He told me to write the ombudsmen. Soooooo, right now my budget is looking like it's going to be well over $5000. My husband is going to freak!

They probably won't waive it if you're not only waiting for the CPNE -- the only reason they do that is because the CPNE wait time is so long.

Another thought -- could you drop the CC Micro and do EC's Micro exam instead? Might save you a little cash in the long run.

I thought about that option as well. I really want to transfer to MSU and I want my Micro to count. I'm so tired of having credits that don't transfer. Besides that, it was a really fun class today!! Even though it's a drag to go to a classroom, and some of my former students are in the class, I'm excited to have a teacher! I've been doing online stuff for the past 4 years and today was so refreshing. The thought of not cramming a semesters worth of material into 4 weeks is nice! It's amazing how in control of my life I feel (except the CPNE crap)!

Anyways, I understand Excelsior's point... I just wish they would be a little more flexible after all the money I've given them.

Thanks again for the input!

I did Chancellor's Careplan Lab and thought it was great, Stay at the Candlewood Suites, the rooms are really nice and so is the staff, and you will get a great rate on your room. Good luck with your cpne.:wink2:
