Hey everyone,
I just completed my registration today as a freshman in the BSN program. Since, I'm starting in the spring semester, I was informed that it would take me 4 1/2 years to graduate from this point. At my school, nursing specific courses are only offered during spring semesters. However, since I don't have any credits, I cannot take any nursing classes this semester, so I'll have to do my pre-reqs and start next Spring 2010. Basically, this means that I'm going to be done with all of my general classes before graduation. So, I was thinking I would minor in something to occupy my time. Is this a smart idea and if so, are there any minors that would actually be relevant to nursing? I thought I'd get some good advice before I contact the school.
Thanks so much!

No reason not to take a minor if you can do so without adding any additional time to your schooling.
Some that come to mind as possibilities include psychology and biology, since you will need a number of credits in these disciplines any way.
If you have any interest in business, a minor in management would be valuable in your future working life, since most nursing programs offer little foundation in this important discipline.
Good luck!

Communication...so much of working with others (and managing them) is communicating effectively.

I have a degree in psychology and it seems like it will be a big help to me! I've already had an edge up on other classmates because Maslow and other were so familiar to me, and used in nursing all the time. I was really surprised when I discovered that. I also agree that communication would be good, or even sociology. Anything that will help you better understand your pts.

I might suggest Spanish (unless you have a great command of professional Spanish already). A good nurse should be able to communicate and educate with all patients/clients -- and being able to speak Spanish is very important now

I would go for psychology, but other ones that might be good.. public health, health services administration, or nutrition
