Thank you sweet pea. He has all of his support classes done, but he made an 88 on his HESI. I think he is going to look into taking pre req's for his BSA I the mean time, and he is looking into getting his CNA Cert too.

Does anyone have any information on what books we need? Or has anyone started reading them if you have 'em.

@escapebigd: For the fundamentals textbook, did you guys need the edition with the access code and cd? I want to go ahead and order mine and and start reading early. :)Can't wait to meet everyone during orientation!

No we didn't need the access code for that class or the cd. We could even use an older edition (8th) if we wanted to.

In case any of you were interested here is just a few tips for those of you starting this fall...

We are only allowed to wear our brookhaven scrubs to our nursing classes/labs/etc, I'm not sure how that will work when you are first starting because you might not have your scrubs when classes start. Oh and there is also a cheaper place to get scrubs that the school doesn't know about, so if you are interested in that PM me and I will give the name.

Start doing fundamentals nclex style questions now, get used to the way they word their questions and answers. A lot of students in my class were making 60's and even as low as 40's on exams in fundamentals. I hope your class won't have to go through that.

Study from a lot of different types of nursing books... The fundamentals teacher would ask questions on the exam that you can't find the answer to in the kozier book. So use your drug book to look up drugs related to cardiovascular, respiratory, sleep, etc. Try using Davis fundamentals or evolve fundamentals books as well.

Try to do your service learning hours early, a lot of people were rushing around trying to get their volunteer hours done in the middle of finals/major care plan/etc (it wasn't pretty).

Sorry that was so long, I just got done with first semester and looking back on how it all went down I just wanted to give you guys a better start than my group had.

@escapebid- where do we need to do the service learning hours from?Is it ok if we do them before hand? Also fundamental books that we are talking about, do you guys buy them online or the bookstore? I am so confused *rolling eyes*

Go to sweatmonkey.com to sign up for that and look at where you can do your volunteer hours. I did mine at a hospice listed on sweatmonkey. I was told that the hours needed to be done within the semester, and you have to do hours every semester, even summer.

The extra fundamentals books like davis and evolve's can be found at barnes and noble, or on amazon. I bought davis through amazon on ebook so I could have it on my kindle/android to study with.

I'm a third semester student at Brookhaven. My suggestion for you is to relax this summer! Once you start the program, it will be a whirlwind until Xmas break. I would highly suggest buying and using the Saunders NCLEX review book and the Review and Rationale book series (fundamentals, psych, med surg, ob, pedi, etc.). Once in the program, you will need to learn how to test the nursing way. All the answers may be right on the question, you will need to select the most correct answer or what you would do first. I would also suggest the most current version of the care plan book. Prior versions are difficult and not correct. My advice is for you to be flexible, know there will be last minute changes and go with it.

The book pack you purchase will not have the fundamentals book, ob, pedi, and med surg case study book included.

Hi kickymarcia, would you please share what your typical week was like when you started the program? Did you work at all? I am starting in the fall and am also on the waitlist with UTA so I am really trying to make a decision about my parttime job which is really Fri-Sun. Thank you so kindly.

The first eight weeks is pretty much mon-Friday with weekends off. Then you start clinical one day a week and will need a preclinical paperwork day. If your work is in the evenings then it could be fine. You'll need plenty of time to study too. Your schedule will be so busy that you can only concentrate on a few days at a time. I've worked part time/24 hours since the beginning. Looking back I don't see how I was able to do it the first semester. Each semester brings less hours requirement. I would say your schedule will really open up the third semester. Then by the final semester, you'll be down to one clinical day and one lecture day.
