books written by preemies

Some of my friends at work are joking about starting a book series about the preemies perspective of NICU. By the way, a lot of our families could be on Jerry Springer. Any suggestions for titles i.e. Is crack a vitamin? Why's my daddy in prison? How I got my head bleed. Coke-It's not just a soft drink. Please don't let these people take me home. This is just a joke. We're not trying to offend. What are your suggestions?

Well, there is a book already out there written by the mom of a preemie, all done from the baby's perspective. It's not a Jerry Springer-type situation at all though. So it would be nothing like you guys are talking about...

It's about the very hard NICU course of a 23-week baby boy in a British hospital. It's THE BEST neonatal book I've ever read. Even though it's fictional (based on mom's meticulous journals) it really gives this preemie a voice. I have to spoil it though, because I wouldn't want anyone to recommend this book to the parents of a preemie currently in a NICU - the baby dies. But it's just about the most beautifully written thing I've ever read.

I think you're on to something there! I can't help but think though, that any realistic premie perspective would also have to take a few shots at the nurses and the silly things we often do.

Oh yes, the book I recommended mentions the NICU staff constantly. The baby had names for everybody based on his experiences with them...Nurse Nasty, Nurse Clean Flowers, Nurse Scurry, Doctor Shaky Hands, etc. There is one day when the baby was assigned to a nurse he didn't like - she handled him roughly and then positioned him strangely afterwards. Even though he was very uncomfortable, he didn't dare let her know because he didn't want her coming over and touching him again!

I think you mentioned it's not something that someone new to the NICU should read, right? I've just finished my 12-week orientation and I'll be starting on my own this week .... so I'm still VERY new! Do you think I should wait a bit to read this? I definitely want to at some point!

The only reason I think I'd wait until after starting in the NICU is because, in the book, they don't talk about what's wrong with the baby by name all the time. The baby will describe his symptoms in his own terms, and once in a while he'll overhear the doctors and his parents calling his problems by name. But if you haven't been in the NICU for very long, you might got get his little references, you know?

I think by the time you're done wth orientation you should be fine though. I just meant that someone who hasn't yet spent time in the NICU would be confused.

I've got one from our unit. "I drank through all my OTHER pregnancies and they were fine!"

I had a patient that could have written that book. We had to send him home the other day with such a piece of work since she had been cleared by DHS.
