Why don't you pull you own background check to see if you have anything on your record, I think it's only like $5 or $10 dollars!

the BNE will do a fingerprint check thru FBI database. If you don't show up there, chances are you are clear. HOWEVER, I would call or write the BNE for more info.

Nurse employers also do thorough background checks. Be sure you can get a job too before you spend the $$ and time for nursing school. Nurses are under high scrutiny and employers are reluctant to hire a nurse with a criminal background.

Many employers and almost all legitimate agencies/traveler groups run background checks.

Id also speak with the lawyer that handled that case for you . Typically from what I have read and seen on the news a deffered judgement means ones record is wiped clean if one meets the terms of the agreement, that being said one would have no record.

I found out after some searching that I need to fill out and turn in a Declaratory order to the BNE. I should apply for one before I start a nursing program because it takes 6 months to 2 years to have one approved. If it is approved then I can sit for the NCLEX (sp) to get an RN license. Thanks everyone.

I am almost finished with my BS in Computer Science but am considering switching careers to nursing in a few years (enough time to pay back loans and save up some money). I had a question about the Board of Nurse examiners and their criminal background checks.
5 years ago in 1999 I was given a felony deffered adjudication probation sentence for unlawful possession of a knife and criminal trespass (simultaneously). At DCCCD it is not considered one of the 'prohibited histories' according to their website FAQ. And DCCCD runs a seven year background check and I would start the nursing program more than seven years after the original offense date.
But this is my question. Does the BNE also run 7 year background checks or do they go back farther than that? If I qualify for clinical rotations for DCCCD criteria does that mean I would also qualify to get an RN license from the BNE? And would my offense prevent me from getting an RN license by the Texas BNE?
I would really hate to spend 2 years studying for an RN license and then not be allowed to practice nursing at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

before you even send in an application to the board with your fee the board will want a declaration from you. you can get it off the website and it was 150. for me to send it in and see if they would give me a license. the background check doesn't matter because one of the questions on the application is if you have ever been convicted of or recieved def adj. for anything. so what they do is you send them everything, a statement about what happened court papers ect and they will make a decision. mine was with restrictions but i also didn't know to do this until nov and i was graduating in may so i might not have graduated and would have went to school without being able to take boards. so good luck.

I have a situation right now where a GN cannot get a permit and cannot take NCLEX because the declaratory order has not been processed yet. It was received by the BNE in March!!!! This graduate is losing $$$ waiting. I contacted the BNE and was told there are about 500 cases before the enforcement committee. They are overwhelmed. Please write your congressman/woman about this!! The BNE needs additional funding in order to hire staff. Otherwise, delaying licensure delays care for someone.

So it's been a while since you posted - just wanted to see if there was any update regarding your situation. Please divulge any info... have a few old misdemeanors, and I'm worried.
