Black Toe

Hey everyone, i wanted your opinion about my 6 yr. old. He was at mcdonalds with his grandparents when he stomped his big toe on the door leaving out and his toe nail (or up underneath it) has turned black. Its been a while since he's done this ( like a month) but its still black. should this be seen by a doc?

I remember when i did that at a real young age my toenail fell off. I guess it rotted. but im just not sure about his. the toenail is still attached and it doesnt hurt him.

just wanted some opinions. I cant wait until im a nurse and I can answer my own questions

It's probably just dried blood underneath the nail from the injury... it probably bled out from underneath the nail. It will grow out. If the toe has good capillary refill (is it pink? does the color return in less than 2 seconds after you pinch it?) and it doesn't hurt, I wouldn't worry about it. Go to a doc if you feel uncomfortable though.

I would feel a lot more comfortable if I took him to the doc. But then, I would've probably taken him in a lot sooner than this. JMO.

well, im no peds nurse but first...if you question if he should be seen....he should be seen. second, I would bet a dollar to doughnut that baby will fall off yet. good luck!

i have had blood under a fingernail or toe nail .. it takes a long while to grow out . ask any one who has ever hammered the wrong nail

I don't know.. I never saw anyone have to get medical treatment for that until my brother completely closed the car door on his finger. Dr drilled too little holes in his nail to release pressure... I'd never heard of it before.

I slammed my thumb in a car door in February - it's still growing out after taking nearly 2 months to fall off. Doc cauterized a hole in it 16 hours after I did it (on a Sunday afternoon naturally) and INSTANT relief. It was beautiful. Until then it throbbed and hurt like a sonofagun with every pulse.

That nail will eventually fall off, it takes awhile though. If your concerned go ahead and take him to his Dr. It will ease your mind.

As a kid I remember seeing my dad with black nails, they always fell off on there own.
