Best and cheaper online program for MSN in informatics

Johns Hopkins has a good online program which is much cheaper than the price you staated above: JHU Applied HIT

I just completed the MSN/Informatics from University of Phoenix. I enjoyed it. However, it was not cheap.. at all!

I tend to overdo things, but even at that I am going to say about 10 hours a week?

It's a sacrifice. I actually took 2 classes at once and modified my work schedule so that I would have a day off during the week. During that day off I would attack papers and assignments for 8-9 hours straight.

Every class has a group and at least 1 assignment. The group stuff is really beneficial for developing team concepts, something that as nurses we are already familiar with.

I would recommend it. I would recommend University of Phoenix also, but there are way cheaper options.

I am currently in an MSN-informatics program at American Sentinel University..Its a lot cheaper at $450 a unit and is also nursing accredited. So far so good! I am just a little worried as I dont see too much on this school from the graduates of this program..its been around a while but newly accredited.

I am looking at an in-state university program for an MSN in informatics. The costs seem to be more reasonable than private institutions.

Check out Grantham University $265.00 a credit hour and if you or your spouse is prior military they give you a discount.

For my money, I am thinking of American Sentinel for my MSN in Informatics. They gave me 6 credits for previous coursework so I have 30 to go.

I am not familiar with this school so I can't say. My advice to anyone seeking this advanced degree, which can be quite expensive, is to be as sure as you can you're going to get a Return on your investment. Do you have a manager willing to bring you on? Or are you just going out on a crapshoot that you'll be able to get a job when you're get your degree. After all, you'd hate to end up still on the floor but with big student loan payments if you're not sure , or if this was more a way off the floor than your real passion.

I say this not as discouragement but most facilities will not consider you for positions unless you have already hands-on with whatever EMR they happen to be converting to. And most facilities hire in-house over people outside even if the outsiders are more qualified.

So, the point is be sure this is your passion and not a ticket off the floor. If you can honestly say yes to that and budget is an issue , I would look at one of the ARRA Hitech certificate programs which are graduate level no-cost one year programs.

Northern Kentucky University has an established MS in Health Informatics program. They are beginning a MSN in Informatics this fall. The Health Informatics program is all online. I am not sure about the new MSN in Informatics program. It may be a combination program. However tuition is very reasonable at less than $500/cr hr.
