BCIT August 2013 Applicants

Is anyone else annoyed that it's been almost a month and a half since an e-mail went out that stated " Please continue to check your myBCIT email account regularly. You will be receiving your text book list, uniform/scrubs information, equipment list and a lot more in the next month." and none of this information has been distributed yet? I really hope they get on it quickly.

I am starting to get annoyed as well because it seems like everything is going to be very last minute! I want to get everything prepared beforehand .

By the way, for those who have yet to book their Respirator Fit Testing: BCIT has dates on July 17th, 19th and August 2nd!

I can understand your frustration....you're going to experience this in level 1 as well. I'm going to make a post pretty soon so you guys know what to expect. I know I would have appreciated it if someone had done the same for my intake!

Yeah I think there's a reason to not follow it; mine says theres time conflicts with a few courses.

Tuition's a grand total of 3386.44

The schedule you have in your myBCIT is definitely not the schedule you'll be following. You won't get your final final schedule until the first day of class. It's a little frustrating, I know, but you will come to find level 1 in general is a little frustrating.

Here's an idea of what to expect (this was my level 1 schedule)

Monday - 0830-1030 professional practice seminar

1030-1230 communications seminar

1330-1530 patho lecture

Tuesday - clinical

Wednesday - clinical

Thursday - 0730-1030 PBL

1230-1430 skills lab

1530-1700 patho seminar

Friday - off (for me and many others, unless your patho seminar is on Friday instead of Thursday)

For the first 6 weeks clinical = NURS 1019 which you need to pass to go on to NURS 1030. In 1019 you are only responsible for assessments and your clinical days are relatively short. You are not responsible for pt care until 1030. Around the time that 1019 ends, NURS 1063 starts which is pharmacology and this course is online.

I (and many others) found level 1 to be confusing at times due to the massive amount of information thrown at us...especially in the first 6 weeks with 1019. My advice is to take it one day and one week at a time, otherwise you will overwhelm yourself. If you guys have any other questions.... let me know :)

Get your stethoscope beforehand from regency medical supplies (Canada Way & Willingdon) beforehand if you have a student card. It is much cheaper than the scrub sale prices. There are lots of cool colors you can order in as well.

Most people in my level have the Classic II SE, which is a double sided stethoscope. Being the lazy person I am.. I chose the single sided Master Classic II; it was weird at first but eventually you get the hang of the doublesidedness.

Scrubs are MUCH cheaper in the US. So if you have the time make a trip down and buy 2 sets for clinical (plain color, nothing fancy, but some clinical instructors don't mind the 2 toned scrub sets. YMMV). Also buy a scrub top for lab. You don't need the pants for lab.

As for pre-readings, I didn't do them as they made no sense at the time. For 1019, each week there's one day clinical and one day on campus (I forget if it was all weeks). The on campus portion focuses on each component of the basic assessment (basically the prereadings). So if you skim the readings beforehand and PARTICIPATE in those sessions you should be fine (it was pretty fun too).

As for criminal record check and immunization.. I don't remember it being stressful or anything because they are pretty slack about it. I think for the criminal record thing you only need to sign a piece of paper. If you cant get your immunization records then I think they are cool with that too, since there are many older students that had their shots done before some of you were even born . Like someone mentioned earlier you may need to get your blood tested.

Just work hard for the first 6 weeks and make sure you pass 1019. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.
