I haven't been on much lately. I just found out Tuesday that due to a severe back injury, my nursing career is over. I have always been a floor nurse and was planning on going back to school this fall to get my RN. The doc basically told me that unless I want to take a desk job after I get my RN that I won't ever be able to do nursing again. I have always been very active in the care of my patients and to be told that I cannot be a floor nurse is absolutely devastating. I have to see a spinal specialist on the 22nd to find out what type of surgery has to be done. I have been off work since May 12th, I got hurt at work during a code on the 11th, and can barely clean my house due to the pain. I guess really what I am looking for are some words of comfort.

Don't know the right words, but definitely have big shoulders to lean on, long arms for hugs, and plenty of strength to help get you through. Sending warm thoughts your way.
Thanks guys, I really appreciate it. Nursing has been a part of my life since I was 13 and to have it taken away has just really devastated me. Just keep me in mind and again, thanks for all the kind words, it means alot.

I'm sorry you're going through this. The pain would be bad enough on its own, but to have to give up something you really love makes it especially cruel.
My fervent hope is that the surgeon relieves your pain, and quickly. My back was out this spring for only a short time, and not as badly injured as yours, but it was still MISERABLE. I can only imagine what you're going through.
And, hey, maybe floor nursing isn't in the picture at this point, but that doesn't mean a nursing career is closed off to you forever. Don't count getting your RN out just yet. You have a good patient care background, so you already know more about nursing than the average student. My guess is that you'll be able to find something to do with that RN that you like and that will utilize your previous experience without killing your back.
Hang in there, and keep posting!

It is sad news..... but please don't let go of the possibilities in front of you... one of the biggest things a nurse can do is comfort, what if you worked with poison control and comforted and helped that way ? It's not the trip up the mountain that's a pain...it's the pebble in your shoe... you can still be a great nurse, it might look a bit different than your original vision, but it can still be great. Good luck and Gods speed with healing.
