Okay here is my dilemma. I love L&D and will end up there eventually. I've been offered a job at Brack in Med/Tele with an 18 week Versant RN residency. Versant is supposed to be great, so I accepted the preliminary offer.
Well now, I have the opportunity to interview for St. Davids NAMC for L&D in their new gigantic women's center. The downside.. I don't get the residency.. but it would be a 16 week internship I believe. My research tells me that the Seton system is better.. but I LOVE L&D and am tempted to take this NAMC job if I get it.
Any advice? Anyone have experience at NAMC or with St. Davids women's services?
anyone?? 22 views and no one has anything to say??

I don't know what to tell you but I have only heard good things about Seton. Do you think you will regret the med/tele floor if you decide to take that and not do L and D? I might be wrong but I thought its hard to get a L & D position so if you have the opportunity and you know that is what you want then I would say go for it. However, if you want to be marketable in the future and you decide your not going to be an L & D nurse forever you might want to take the med/tele position.
Good luck!

Good Luck to you in anything associated with the Seton Healthcare Network. All of the hospitals in Austin are owned either by Columbia HCA or by the Seton Healthcare Network. Brack is owned by Seton, NAMC by Columbia HCA. Although I know several nurses who have put in many years w/the Seton Network, I would not recommend them to my worst enemy. I worked with them for about a year and it was the most negative experience I have ever had in my ten years of nursing. Go with NAMC.

I too, worked for Brack (Seton system)...hated it. The not-for-profit status means less money, cutting corners and ducking benefits to stay afloat and continue to serve a large austin population that doesn't pay, make an attempt to pay, and in fact abuses the system. If you take that residency, you will always regret, what might have been. On the other hand, experience is awesome. I also worked for St Davids, for-profit, so they have their own problems. I will say this.....if Labor and Delivery is what you want to do.....then jump at the chance. NAMC is a nice, newer hospital. The equipment is top notch and employment with St Davids is what you make of it. Kind of like the army....make it work or hate it. The benefits with such a national company is so-so but they are national. You can go to any state and find an HCA owned facility for the most part. Just my two bits. I was once offered a job in the ER and I jumped on it. I never looked back. It something is calling your name...jump on it. The nice thing with NAMC is if you hate that facility or the personnel, you usually can transfer to Round Rock or Georgetown. My wife is a L & D nurse with St Davids..for 21 years.
Good luck, Austin is an awesome city with it's own culture. You will no doubt like it.

I really hate hearing that about Seton in Austin, as it's one of the facilities I have been in contact with, looking into their Versant NICU Residency thingamabob for when I graduate in May.

I work for both systems with their staffing agencies. I don't have too much bad to say about either of them, however you should follow what you love. It is much easier to do what you want the first time. Learn from my mistake, I switched to Med/Surg to do agency to get paid more and have more flexibility. It's ok, but my passion is oncology. I don't hate going to work but it's not the same as it was when I was working on an all oncology floor.
