I have been out of school for MANY years. Now I am taking my assessment test this week to start my Pre Reqs for RN school. I am so worried about the algebra part. I have never taken algebra and know nothing about it. I went online to look at beginning algebra and it may as well be written in Greek. Will I have to take other classes just to be able to take the Pre Reqs? I am so confused.

I was the same way! I have been out of school for 8 years so I knew I was doomed, I couldn't even remember if I took Algebra or not. I took it and have to take an extra math class before I get to the normal pre req. don't stress over it too much, it may be better to start from the begining that way your GPA still stays in order
Thanks. I guess I will just take the test and see what happens. I will have to guess on the answers and hope my guessing skills are good. Thanks again.

Korysmom,
I was out of school for 16 years and just recently decided to go back to pursue my dream of becoming a RN. Thanks to all the wonderful people here, I was able to practice enough to place into Statistics / Pre Calculus. ( Which was my goal)
I used many of the math websites people on allnurses recommended. I think it is possible but you need to practice every day. Here is the link to the sticky with all the websites:

Also, find out which assessment test your college uses. I took the COMPASS test. You can find practice COMPASS tests online if you google for them. The ACT website also has some practice tests.
Best of luck! Believe in youself, you can do it!

Thats half of the fun! pre-reqs to get into pre-reqs! I kinda hate it. I started school not knowing what I wanted to do and as of this thursday I will be finished with my GE. Two years of college so far. and pretty much all of the pre-reqs have pre-reqs. It kinda sucks that I've been planning it for the past year and I am still not even taking the pre-req's. I would be but decided to switch colleges. So I just have to take chemistry (already took it but the new college requires a different one) and then I can finally start on Anat and Physi 1. So a year more to finish pre-req's until I can even apply for the nursing program. *sigh* I had one friend who didn't get in for 3 years and finally gave up. So I'm just crossing my fingers that I will get in relatively soon after applying. Oh the long path that is becoming a nurse. But all worth it. :yelclap:

:DWhat a relief to come across this! I met w/ the assessment office yesterday and was told the hard truth that I have to take the math assessment FIRST and only if I've passed w/ a 70% can I enroll into the Chemistry Pre Req that is currently required. Apparently none of my math classes from another college will transfer; I was devasted and SO discouraged. I haven't taken any math class in over 8 years!! Due to the fact that my original degree is in an unrelated field, it looks like I'm starting over completely.
But, the info provided here is very helpful, thanks for the math websites also. Regardless, I have to stay the course; come what may! :wink2:
Whew!!! I took the assessment test last night. Of course, like I expected, I will have to take a pre req to a pre req of math. But thats ok. So I am signing up for the classes today. Now the work starts.....

I have been out of school for 31 years and have finally made the decision to pursue my dreams of becoming a nurse at the age of 48.
After taking my placement tests in English and Math, I scored a 95 in English and a 34 in Algebra. Needless to say, before I can even take a pre-req in Algebra, I need to take a semester of Pre-Algebra (which I'll be starting in 2 weeks), along with a semester each of Elementary Algebra and Intermediate Algebra. That's 3 semesters of algebra before I even get to the pre-reqs!! Ugh!! I have always had a problem with math and now I can't believe I have to take 2 years of it. But it can be done....and it's never too late to learn.
Good luck to you....you'll do fine!

Don't give up! :) I would check after first semester with other colleges.
As you know some of them have different requirements.
In my present college I would have to wait almost a year to take final prerequisites! I said to my self "NO WAY!". Starting this Fall I am going to attend another college. I am taking there Chemistry without taking Math 99 (math 97 is prereq for Chemistry). Today I got an email that I can take also Biology. I had to ask about permission since Chemistry is a prereq for Biology. That way during winter semester I will take A&P!
I guess we are in the same boat. I am 46 and have to take three math classes. What state are you in? I am in california. thanks for writing. It helps to know someone else is doing this right along with me.

Thank you everyone for your help and encouragement. It does help a lot. I am so glad I found this forum.
I'm in PA...and I'm sure glad I found someone in the same boat! I was starting to think I was all alone.
This semester is when I'll be starting with only 2 classes, Pre-Algebra and English 101. I started slow to get my feet wet and get used to being in the classroom again. I plan to take more classes next semester because if I continue with only 2, I'll never finish!!
I still have to take a Bio and Chem class before I get to the Bio and Chem pre-reqs. I figure that it's better that I take those brush-up classes and Ace the pre-reqs than jump right in and get C's. I don't know if I'm thiinking right or not, but at least it's a plan.
Good luck to you....I'm sure we'll both do great!
