Asking you to work an extra shift.....

When you are off from work and they call you to come in because they are understaffed, do you come in or not? What is your usual reply? Just curious.....

No and no. Thankfully, even if I answer and say no, they don't usually badger. They say thanks and remind me that if I change my mind I can call back. I usually don't answer. I let the machine or voice mail get it so I can listen to the message and contemplate if I really want to.

I've been a nurse for a little over a year and even at first I wouldn't go in extra very often. My sanity and health were more important to me than the money or than looking like a "team player". Call me selfish, but I'm not going to sacrifice my relationships, social life (the very little of it there is), or health for a few extra bucks.

practice: "I am not able to help you today"

repeat as necessary.

my facility had the nerve to call me yesterday to come in, after refusing to even consider my time off request
