However, I would suggest calling some aesthetic nurses employed in settings you are interested in working. Ask them for advice. You may get a feel for your local market.

I just found this site & was excited to find someplace to talk with others about this field. I have been in aesthetics for over seven years. There are different laws in each state. I live in Kansas & here & Missouri you don't even have to be a nurse to inject if you have a Dr. who is OK with it. I got my start in a medi-spa & was able to get some great training from various places. I believe the best training comes to you where you get to inject on your patients with someone there giving you one-on-one instruction.

I have recently just went out on my own after years of making alot of money for everyone else. I am going to be doing independent contracting for several different Drs. as well as having a place in an office to see patients of my own. You have to have a Dr. order the Botox & fillers, so the Drs. in my office will be paying for the product & I will be getting a percentage of what I do.

The main thing with this business is getting the experience & becoming a fabulous injector. I have built a huge injectable practice & have become well known for what I do. I still go to courses to continue to improve my skills.

I currently do IPL and hair removal. I will be getting my certificate for Botox and fillers.

I was asked if I carry my own insurance? I tried to apply with a major Nursing carrier and they will NOT insure me.

The spa I do IPL etc. carries ins., but I would like my own.

Anyone know where I should check?

As far as insurance, I have had the same problem but I do know that NSO will cover you if you are a W-2 employee. They ask if you do aesthetics if you say you're independent, but don't if you say you're W-2. I found another place on this thread -PPIB & just got a quote & it is $2900, where NSO is only $100! I am covered under the Dr.s offices I work in but I am going to get some on my own for my office. In the medi-spa I just left they had insurance so I never did worry about it.

As an independent contractor, you don't usually get a w2. Other problem is I will be retired this year. The place I do IPL and laser hair removal has ins. for me. I'll check and see what I can do. I also sent the question to the ins agency via ANA for when I start doing Botox etc.

Sorry I didn't realize you were an IC. What I worked out with my main office was for them to pay me $1000/mo so it would generate a W2. ( I think that anything over $5000/yr. will generate a W2). Then I write them a check for $1000 from my business acct. for rent. That way I can write off the rent as a business expense. We went through an attorney to set this up so everything is on the up & up. I did this also because of a past employer who will bew trying to sue me over my non-compete.

That is great advice for the future. Do you mind telling me how you got your experience for the injections? I am going to take a class and a plastc surgeon may let me get experience under him, but if he doesn't then what?

Hi Valerie,

After I did some training I just started right in injecting. When I train people I tell them they have to start using what they learned right away or you can forget it - especially when you first get started. Hopefully your class lets you inject alot. Alot of the trainings have you inject 1 person - you don't really learn that much - especially if you are just watching someone else do it. When I train we do didactic for 2-3 hours & then if we are doing Botox & fillers, the person injects for the next 11/2 days. They typically will inject 10-12 people during this time. This is the only way to really get the feel for it. As you know everyone is so different & when it comes to Botox it helps to see alot of different people with different muscle configurations & facial differences.

I still go to seminars if I think it will give me any new pearls for what I do. This week in Vegas I talked to alot of other RNs & saw live injections by some Drs. It was great to see how other people do things & get new ideas.

I decided to go through Medical Aesthetic Traing of CA.

I also looked into Esthetic Skin Institute from FL they also have classes in CA.
